Barnes Leads Wrestling to Eighth Place Finish at Reno Tournament of Champions

Wrestling takes a week off before it heads back to the Midwest next to take part in the Midlands Championships on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.

RENO, Nevada - Seventeenth-ranked senior Heinrich Barnes (Pretoria, South Africa) had another solid outing for the Oregon State wrestling team, taking third place at the Reno Tournament of Champions lasting all day on Thursday.

Barnes improves to 16-2 overall, falling only to Nick Stabile of North Carolina in the semifinals at 149 pounds and earning bonus points in four of his five matches.

As a team, Oregon State finished eighth with 59.5 points with only Pac-10 opponents Cal State Bakersfield and Arizona State finishing ahead of it.

At 165 pounds, junior Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) wrestled unattached, finishing fourth overall. Junior Dan Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.) finished sixth with a 4-3 record. Brascetta wrestled at 165 pounds for the first time since the 2006-07 season, when he finished with a 1-1 record.

Senior Jake Gonzales (Enumclaw, Wash.) also earned a sixth place finish at 125 pounds going 5-3 with a pin, major decision and three decisions.

Sophomore Brice Arand (Springfield, Ore.) wrestled for the first time at 184 pounds since the Best of the West Tournament, going 4-2 and upsetting No. 18 Chris Daggett of Liberty in a 7-3 decision. And redshirt freshman Clayton Jack (Vacaville, Calif.) went 3-2 with a pair of pins and a major decision.

After splitting in their first two matches of the day, redshirt freshmen Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) both were forced to medical forfeit in their third matches of the day.

Wrestling in his first varsity matches for Oregon State, redshirt freshman Garrett Drucker (Huntington Beach, Calif.) went 2-2 earning a pin and decision at 141 pounds.
