Dec-18-2007 09:11Wolves Pull Away in Second Half for Win, 79-59Salem-News.comWestern Oregon moves to 5-2 with non-conference victory.
MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon had four players in double figures, pulling away from a stubborn Walla Walla University club in the second half to claim a 79-59 men’s basketball win on Monday night in the Physical Education Building. WOU moved to 5-2 on the season with the non-conference victory, while Walla Walla dropped their ninth straight game to fall to 3-12. Mike McLaughlin (14) and Adonal Arrington (13) both came off the bench to lead the host Wolves in scoring. Sam Kelly (11) and Travis Kuhns (10) were also in double digits for WOU. Brett Weisner led Walla Walla with 18 points, Gerard Dauphin added 15 and Chris Wilson added 13 for the visiting Wolves. The much taller Western Wolves doubled-up their visitors on the boards, 48-24. Western Oregon led for most of the first half, but it took a Kelly lay-in right before the buzzer to give the Wolves a 42-40 halftime lead. Wilson and Weisner had 13 each at the half for the visiting Wolves, while Kelly had nine to pace the Wolves at the break. Dauphin hit a three-pointer to open the second half to give WWU a 43-42 lead, but the hosts quickly countered with baskets by Liam Hughes and Kuhns to retake the top spot on the scoreboard. Western would never trail again, with their 20 point lead at the horn the largest of the night. Western Oregon will now take a week-plus off before hosting the Phoenix Inn & Suites WOU Classic on Dec. 28-29. The Wolves will take on Concordia on Friday night (7 pm) while Central Washington plays Sonoma State at 5:00 PM.
