Dec-10-2007 21:16Oregon State Finishes Road Swing at CS BakersfieldSalem-News.com SPORTSCS Bakersfield enters the contest with the Beavers with a record of 1-7 on the season as the Roadrunners have lost five straight since a one-point win over Fresno State.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Winners of four-of-five, the Oregon State men’s basketball team returns to action this week as the Beavers travel to Bakersfield, Calif., for a non-conference contest against CS Bakersfield on Tuesday, Dec. 11th at 7:00 PM. The meeting between the Roadrunners and the Beavers will mark the first one between the two teams in school history.
The Beavers are coming off a win at UC Davis as Oregon State claimed a 73-59 victory over the Aggies. Seth Tarver led the way for Oregon State as the sophomore poured in a career-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting to lead the Beavers to a 14-point win.
Tarver continues to lead the Beavers as the sophomore has scored in double figures in every contest this year and leads the team with 16.1 points per game. Marcel Jones ranks second on the squad with 14.6 points per contest.
The game with the Roadrunners marks the much-anticipated debut of Kansas transfer C.J. Giles. In two years with the Jayhawks, Giles averaged 4.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while blocking 49 shots.
CS Bakersfield enters the contest with the Beavers with a record of 1-7 on the season as the Roadrunners have lost five straight since a one-point win over Fresno State. The Roadrunners, a first-year Division I independent program, are led by head coach Keith Brown who is 37-29 in two-plus seasons with the Roadrunners.
Terrence Johns leads the Roadrunners on the season as he is averaging 17.3 points through the first eight games of the season. Santwon Latunde is the only other Roadrunner in double figures as he is averaging 11.5 points per game.
As a team, CS Bakersfield is hitting 41.6 percent of its shots from the field and have hit 36.7 percent of its shots from behind the arc.
On the defensive end of the floor, the Roadrunners are giving up an average of 82.4 points per game as opponents are hitting 52.3 percent of their shots from the field.

SETH TARVER OFF TO A FAST START FOR THE BEAVERS One of several bright spots for the Beavers at the start of the season has been the performance of sophomore guard/forward Seth Tarver. The sophomore, who fought a foot injury throughout his freshman season, has reached double figures in scoring in each of the first seven games and has led the team in scoring four times on the year.
Tarver registered a career-high 23 points in the win against UC Davis as it marked the second time this year the sophomore has gone for 20-plus points as the forward had a 21-point effort in the win over Idaho State. MARCEL JONES CLOSING IN ON 1,000-POINTS FOR A CAREER With 17 points in the win over UC Davis, Jones is just 43 points shy of becoming the 34th player in Oregon State history to record 1,000 points for a career. The senior ranks third among Pac-10 Conference returning players in career scoring as he enters the contest with the Roadrunners with 957 career points. OREGON STATE DEFENSE AMONG NATION’S BEST One of the strengths for Oregon State this season has been the strong effort on the defensive end of the floor. The Beavers rank 24th in the nation, fourth in the Pac-10, in scoring defense at 57.9 points per game as Oregon State is holding opponents to just 42.8 percent from the field. C.J. GILES TO MAKE OREGON STATE DEBUT Junior center C.J. Giles, a transfer from Kansas, has been cleared to play and will make his first career appearance in an Oregon State uniform when the Beavers take on CS Bakersfield on Tuesday, Dec. 11th at 7:00 PM. Giles will join the team in Bakersfield, Calif., on Monday night.
Giles came to Oregon State from Kansas, where he played two years for the Jayhawks. As a sophomore during the 2005-06 season, he played in 33 games and started 13 while averaging 6.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots. He ranked seventh in the Big 12 in blocks.
As a freshman, he appeared in 21 games and started five times while averaging 2.8 points and 2.4 rebounds. The Jayhawks won the Big 12 regular-season title both seasons and in 2006 they won the Big 12 tournament championship. During the summer of 2005, he was one of 21 players invited to the USA Basketball Under-21 National Team trials. He was injured; however, during the first day of the trials and did not continue. As a prep player, Giles was a heavily recruited prospect out of Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, where he was the 2004 Seattle Metro MVP and the runner-up for state player of the year honors. He was rated among the top 80 players nationally by Hoop Scoop and rivals.com. OREGON STATE OFFERING FANS TAKE-3 HOLIDAY TICKET PLAN The Oregon State athletic department is pleased to announce the Take-3 Holiday Plan for three home men’s basketball games during the month of December. The $12 package will include one General Admission ticket in Section 11 to the following games: December 16th vs. Tennessee Tech, December 19th vs. Northern Colorado and December 30th vs. Montana State.

The game against Tennessee Tech will mark the much-anticipated home debut of highly-touted transfer C.J. Giles to the Oregon State line-up. UP NEXT... Oregon State will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 16, as the Beavers host Tennessee Tech at 2:00 PM.
