Aug-31-2007 07:07Women's Soccer: Corban Shutout by The Master's CollegeSalem-News.com SPORTSWith the loss, Corban is now 1-2-0.
SALEM, Ore. - In the first official Soccer Under the Lights game for Corban's women's soccer team, the Warriors battled a tough squad from The Master's College and were unable to come away with the victory, 3-0, on Thursday in front of the home crowd. In the 38th minute, the visiting Lady Mustangs got on the board when Sarah Baumgardner tallied The Master's College's first goal off the season off an assist from Katie McMannis. McMannis began the play by sending a through ball to an on-coming Baumgardner, who rifled a shot from 18 yards out into the lower right hand corner of the goal. Over the final 17 minutes of the opening half, both teams fought hard with neither team being able to crack the opposing defense which resulted in a half time score of 1-0 in favor of the visitors. To open the second half, Corban came out with an intent to score and almost knotted the game at 1-all when freshman Katie Hanson blasted a shot that The Master's goalkeeper, Lindsay Marr, blocked in front of her onto the open feet of Corban senior Megan Waunch. Waunch scooted the ball around Marr and found sophomore Jessica Matthews in front of the net. Unfortunately for the Warriors, Matthews shot attempt went just wide of the goal and thwarted any chance that Corban had of tying the game. In the 71st minute, The Master's College an insurance goal when Sierra Goff took a pass from Jessica Wick and connected on a rising shot from 18 yards out that found the top right corner of the net. Both Goff and Wick played a perfect 1-2-combo play, as Goff began with the ball and dished it off to Wick, who promptly sent a pass back to the awaiting foot of Goff for the goal. Just over twelve minutes later, McMannis capped the night's scoring with her first goal of the season and third point of the night. McMannis teamed with Mary Lee, as the duo played opossum in front of the Warriors' goal before sliding a shot past Corban's diving net-minder. Hanson led all players with six shots (1 on goal), as Corban out-shot The Master's College by six (17-11). Corban's sophomore goal keeper Laurel Riggin ended the night with three saves, while Marr recorded a game-high six saves in net for the Lady Mustangs. With the loss, Corban is now 1-2-0 after three of the 2007 campaign. Meanwhile, The Master's College picks up its first win of the season and improves to 1-1-0. The Warriors are next in action on Saturday, September 1st, when they host the NAIA's No. 18-ranked Clan of Simon Fraser University beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.
