CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State women’s soccer team opens their 2007 season with a non-conference match up against Cal State Northridge on Saturday. The game will be played at Paul Lorenz Field at Patrick Wayne Valley Stadium; start time is 7:00 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. The Oregon State women’s soccer team will return seven of eleven starters this season, including senior Jodie Taylor (Merseyside, England), who along with incoming transfer Rachael Axon (London, England) previewed their talents during the Nordic Cup this summer. Taylor is Oregon State’s leading scorer and is within reach of becoming the school’s all-time leading women’s scorer this season. Also returning for the women of Oregon State is senior defender Monica Storm (Chino, Cali.), and sophomore midfielder Melissa Peck (Boise, Idaho) who stepped out with 2 goals and 3 assists. “We’re looking to be successful as a group,” Head coach Steve Fennah said today. “Things have been going well. We’ve been making good strides and have had a good atmosphere. Now we just need to go play games.” Cal State Northridge, picked 6th in the Big West Conference for 2007. The lady Matadors finished 10-9-0 last season, with returning starter Kristal Phillips who led the way for Cal State Northridge with 6 goals. “It’s a tricky opening weekend,” Fennah commented. “Cal State Northridge is a solid team with solid coaching. We want to start out well against them.” On Monday, the Oregon State Beavers take on the #4 nationally ranked University of Portland in Portland. The Pilots return 9 starters for the 2007 season, and propose challenges for Oregon State on all areas of the field. Game 1: Oregon State v. Cal State Northridge, Sep. 1. 7:00 p.m. Game 2: Oregon State v. University of Portland, Sep. 2. 2:30 p.m.
