Aug-24-2009 00:32Spin Outs and Surprises at Lebanon SpeedwaySalem-News.com SPORTSThe speedplant returns to action Saturday, Aug. 29 with the U.S. Army Night at the Races followed by the return of the DIRTcar Northwest I-5 Late Model Tour Sept. 5th and 6th.
LEBANON, Ore. - Darren Coffell was one of the competitors who put on a masterful display of driving in traffic in the Clay Cup. The driver from Bend led the majority of the laps in the Outlaw Late Model A-Main event Saturday night at Lebanon’s Willamette Speedway, but found himself trailing the always fast Rob Mayea of Bend on the white flag lap. Mayea, running on the high side of the track, ran up on the back of the car of trophy dash winning Tory Swayngim. Coffell wisely stayed to the low side, went by Mayea on the low side down the backstretch and pulled off his first A-Main event victory of the season. Mayea placed second with Brett James in third, Bob Boyd in fourth and class points leading Jeremy Shank in fifth. Brian Smith, subbing for Glen Hackney, led wire to wire to win the Outlaw B-Main event from the outside pole position. Randy Barley placed second with Steven Sturdevant in third, Randy Boyd in fourth and Fred Lang in fifth. Fast timer Rob Mayea put on his usual clinic of driving in the modified A-Main, coming from the back to take the lead on the ninth lap and pulling away to win his 11th main of the season. Dustin Dittman came back from an early spin and passed Jesse Williamson for second place and Williamson was third. Curtis Towns placed fourth after winning the modified B-Main from the back of the pack, beating out Ron Shinkle. Brett James passed Charlie James on the fifth lap and drove away to his first Super Sport A-Main event win of the season. Kye Frick placed second with Gil Pickett in third, Bob Boyd in fourth and James Slover in fifth. Donald Schott won the B-Main with Willie Sutton in second. David Cronk came from the final starting spot to take the lead of the Sportsman A-Main on the seventh lap and pulled away to his track-best 14th victory of the year and fifth in a row. Justin Dittman placed second with Brian Brown in third. Larry Phillips took back the lead on the 18th lap and went on to win the Sportsman B-Main with Clyde Rood in second and Mike Campbell in third. Classic Sportsman points leading Dave Kingsberry came from the back of the pack to his 11th A-Main win of the year with Brody Pompe in second, Mark Gaylord in third, Brown in fourth and Erik Jarnport rounding out the top five.
