PORTLAND, Ore. - In their first test since appearing in the NAIA championship last season, the No. 2-ranked Concordia women’s soccer team dispatched visiting Grand View University (Iowa) 3-0 in the season opener played at Delta Park on Wednesday.

The match was the season opener for both teams. Concordia will now play six straight away from their home pitch before hosting No. 8-Cal Baptist on Sept. 19.

Grand View went 7-7-5 in 2008 and 5-1-2 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. The Vikings lost to St. Ambrose, the team that CU hosted in the first round of the NAIA Tournament last season, in the conference finals via penalty kicks.

A pair of Cavalier freshman knocked in the first goals of the season for the nine-time defending Cascade Collegiate Conference champions. Kaylynn Winwood (Boise, Idaho) tucked a goal outside the reach of Viking keeper Jorie Shields-Smith in the 32nd minute after receiving a long cross from Sami Andrews (Camas, Wash.).

Less than four minutes later, Shelby Bloodworth (Vancouver, Wash.), another freshman, took touch pass from senior Carli Godard (Roseburg, Ore.) in the middle of the pitch and turned on the ball from 15 yards out to put the Cavs up 2-0.

Kaitlyn Tebbs (Bend, Ore.) provided the final bit of fireworks for the home team with a score in the 64th minute of action. Andrews recorded her second assist of the day on the play.

Georgie Christensen (Hillsboro, Ore.) was virtually untested in goal to post the shutout as the Vikings were limited to a single shot, an effort which sailed high deep in the first period.

“I thought it was a good start for us,” CU head coach Grant Landy said. “They made it difficult for us by putting players behind the ball but we were patient and created chances. We were able to play everybody tonight which was good to get our younger players experience in these games. Through the long haul of the season we are going to need everyone to contribute.”
