Apr-29-2008 05:50Southern Oregon Signs Tacoma Star PitcherSalem-News.com SPORTSJordyn Kurtz will team with Joelle Riekeman, Jr. Riddle, Ore on the Raider staff next season.
ASHLAND, Ore. - Southern Oregon University's softball team, last in team ERA in the Cascade Conference, has added a standout pitcher from Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington to their roster for next season. Coach Kim Fritts says, "Jordyn Kurtz will bring passion, commitment, team play and an array of pitches that blow past batters." Kurtz started playing fast pitch when she was nine and pitching at age 10. She says, "my parents made me play." Despite an early trepidation, Kurtz has turned into one of Tacoma's and Washington State's best 4A pitchers. She only began pitching because, "a little league coach told me I was too short." To prove him wrong Kurtz spent a whole winter pitching to a quilt with a strike zone taped to it just to prove the coach wrong. She's been pitching ever since. In coming to Southern Oregon University, Kurtz plans to major in Elementary Education. Kurtz said, "Coach Fritts saw me play in california, and got in contact with me. We exchanged letters. We worked out a date for a visit, I got to tryout and fell in love with the place. That's when I committed." As a high school pitcher at Stadium, Kurtz currently is 10-0 on the season. She has an ERA of 0.47 and in 60 innings pitched, has 8 shutouts, 1 no-hitter, 2-one hitters and 2-two hitters. If that's not impressive enough the Tacoma Senior has pitched 60 innings and has 100 strikeouts and only 6 walks. She is not bad swinging the bat either. In 12 games she is a .500 hitter with 17 hits in 34 at bat appearances, along with 19 RBI's and a slugging percentage of .853. According to Fritts, "Kurtz throws consistently between 59-62 mph and has a very good change up at 45-48 mph. She can throw a curve, and drop and place her fastball with accuracy. During the 2007 season Jordyn had an era of 0.26, with 128 strikeouts, 10 walks. She has made first team all league every year and was voted as the league co-MVP last season. Kurtz was named to "The Tacoma News Tribune" All Star team as a sophomore, junior and is a good bet to make it again as a senior." Kurtz will team with Joelle Riekeman, Jr. Riddle, Ore on the Raider staff next season. Riekeman currently is 6-9 with an ERA of 5.03. Alicia Caudill, Sr. Sacramento finisher her four-year career at SOU next month. The Raiders are currently 12-18 overall and 10-8 in Cascade Conference play. SOU remains in contention for a berth in the NAIA Regional Tournament May 8-10 at Oregon Tech. Another thing Kurtz brings to SOU is competitiveness. She led her team to a fifth and four place finish in the Washington State Softball Playoffs. Recently, Kurtz won a game against rival Wilson high and will seek that elusive state title in May. One thing you will note about Kurtz are ribbons. "I don't know if its superstition or not, but I always wear ribbons in my hair. There is one blue and one gold ribbon I wear every game. "So as Jordyn Kurtz prepares to attend SOU and continue her education, look for those blue and gold ribbons to give way to red and black ones next season and hopefully bring all that success with her to Ashland.
