CORVALLIS, Ore. - Chris Hopkins had three out of the Beavers’ five hits, but the Oregon State baseball team was shut out by No. 23 Arizona, 7-0, Friday night in front of a crowd of 2,123 at Goss stadium at Coleman Field. Hopkins singled in the third and sixth innings and hit a double down the line in the eighth. It marked his eighth multiple-hit game of the season and third with three hits. Drew George and Ryan Ortiz also had hits for OSU. Arizona starting pitcher Preston Guilmet pitched his first complete game of the season. He held the Beavers to five hits and gave up no runs while striking out 10 batters. He increased his record to 5-2 this season. Oregon State (18-14 overall, 6-7 Pacific-10 conference) starter Mike Stutes had his longest outing of the season, going eight innings on a season-high 152 pitches. Stutes gave up six runs on six hits, with two coming from home runs. He struck a season-high 10 batters. Stutes was credited with the loss and saw his record drop to 2-5 this season. Arizona (28-11, 7-6) got on the board in the first inning with a two run home run by Brad Glenn. It added another run in the second with another home run, this time by Jon Gaston. Glenn went 1-for-5 on the day with two RBI and one run scored. Gaston was 1-for-3 with one RBI and two run scored. Bryce Ortega paced Arizona by going 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI. The teams combined for 21 strikeouts, with Mark Grbavac getting one in the ninth to cap OSU’s night. The Wildcats added three more runs in the eighth and one more in the top of the ninth courtesy of a home run by C.J. Ziegler off Grbavac. The right-hander pitched one inning and gave up one hit and one run and struck out a batter. Oregon State continues tomorrow against Arizona with a first pitch time of 2:06 p.m. PST. The game will be nationally televised on FSN with Jim Watson doing play-by-play and Jerry Kindall color. Because the game is airing nationally on FSN, a webcast on Beaver Nation Online (www.osubeavers.com) will not be available. The contest is also the Pac-10 Game of the Week on XM Radio, channel 193. Mike Parker will be behind the mic on the Beaver Sports Network, Beaver Nation Online (www.osubeavers.com) and Yahoo! Sports. OSU Notes: Mike Stutes has pitched 120 or more pitches in three out of his last four starts ... Stutes was two strikeouts away from his career-high, which was 12 against UNLV (4/20/07) ... The total game time was 2:37, which was the shortest game, time-wise, of the season ... Chris Hopkins extended his hitting streak to four games ...Ryan Ortiz extended his hitting streak to four games.
