AUSTIN, Texas - University of Texas sophomore point guard D.J. Augustin intends to declare himself eligible for the 2008 NBA Draft, he announced today. The fifth player in UT history to earn consensus first-team All-America honors, Augustin has not hired an agent. "I have had a great experience here at The University of Texas," Augustin said. "All I can say is 'thank you' to my teammates, coaching staff and fans that have supported us during my two years at Texas. I have matured a lot as a person, both on and off the court. I have dreamed of playing in the NBA since I was a little boy, and I am ready to start living this dream." Augustin earned both consensus first-team All-America honors and first-team Academic All-America accolades in his sophomore season, becoming just the 15th player in NCAA history to earn both in the same year. The winner of the Bob Cousy Award as the nation's top point guard, Augustin led the Big 12 Conference in assists (5.8 apg) and ranked second in the league in scoring (19.2 ppg). In 73 career games, Augustin averaged 16.9 points and 6.2 assists per contest. He ranks fifth on the school's career assists list (452), fourth in three-point percentage (.402), ninth in free throw percentage (.808) and 18th in scoring (1,234 points). "We are so thankful for the opportunity to have been around an individual like D.J. for the last two years," Texas coach Rick Barnes said. "As good as he is on the basketball court, D.J. is an even better person off the court." The 2008 NBA Draft is scheduled for Thursday, June 26 in New York City. Source: University of Texas
