Oregon Duo Place in Top Four at Greco Nationals

Charlie Alexander competed in the NCAA Championships last month at 285 pounds after he placed fourth in the Pac-10 Championships.

EUGENE, Ore. - A pair of University of Oregon wrestlers finished top four in Greco-Roman wrestling action in the recent University and Fila Cadet Nationals, held at the University of Akron’s Athletic Field House.

Redshirt sophomore Kyle Bounds finished second place in the 74-kilogram (163 pounds) weight class, while redshirt freshman Charlie Alexander added fourth place at 120 kilograms (264.5 pounds).

Bounds advanced to the championship match and lost in the finale to Andrew Bisek of Minnesota Storm (7-0, 5-0).

The Vancouver, Wash., native Bounds opened the tourney with a technical fall win (6-0, 6-0) over C.J. Knowland of the Titan Wrestling Club, a quarterfinal decision (2-5, 2-1, 1-1) over Auton Gottfredson of the USOEC club, and a semifinal decision (2-1, 1-1, 1-1) over Chris Bullins of Y.E.S. Greensboro to reach the final.

After he lost his opener, Alexander won four straight bouts in the consolation bracket before he was beaten in the third-place match (6-0, 4-0) by Peter Kowalczuk of the USOEC club.

The Central Point, Ore., native Alexander opened with a loss to Kurt Klimek of the Titan Wrestling Club (2-1, 1-2, 2-1), then posted decisions over Jim Conners of the Graybird Wrestling Club (7-0, 2-1), Joseph Sheffield of Y.E.S. Greensboro (1-1, 1-1), Brendan Herlihy of Penn State (2-1, 1-1, 1-1) and Jarod Trice of the Chippewa Wrestling Club (1-3, 2-1, 2-1).

Alexander competed in the NCAA Championships last month at 285 pounds after he placed fourth in the Pac-10 Championships. Redshirt junior teammate and Pac-10 runner-up Ryan Dunn also competed in the collegiate finale at 133 pounds and claimed a top-24 finish.
