MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon struck early and often during a 13-2 and 8-0 doubleheader sweep of Saint Martin’s on Tuesday afternoon at the WOU Softball Field.

The wins, the Wolves’ fourth and fifth in a row, allowed the squad to improve to 21-14 on the season and to 9-5 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. That moves the Wolves into a virtual four-way tie for first place, along with Seattle (8-4), Montana State Billings (9-5) and Central Washington (9-5). WOU will host Montana State Billings on Friday (2:30 pm).

Saint Martin’s falls to 16-25 on the season and to 4-10 in the GNAC.

The Wolves scored a season-high 13 runs in the first game, but not before SMU took an early 2-0 lead against Wolves ace Katie Fleer. A second-inning Lisa Holombo single and a two-run homer by Kristi Sigafoos put the Saints on top heading into the bottom of the second.

But the hosts took over from there, crossing the plate eight times in the second stanza. A two-run double by Tyler Sutherland and a two-run home run by Amanda Fleer highlighted an eight-hit inning as WOU took control. The Wolves would add two more runs on Jessica Hallmark’s two-run single in the third inning, and then the pitcher Fleer added offense to her day with a three-run blast over the centerfield fence in the fourth inning.

In the pitcher’s circle, Fleer didn’t allow a hit after Sigafoos’ home run in the second inning. She fanned nine, including five in a row at one point, had no walks and gave up just the two hits to improve to 12-4 on the season.

Offensively, the Wolves had 15 hits in four innings of work. Amanda Fleer was a perfect 3-for-3, while Katie Fleer, Trina Dorn, Kristin Maglasang and Sutherland had two hits each.

In the second game, WOU’s Jessica Wood threw her second consecutive shutout and her fifth on the season during the 8-0 mercy rule win. The freshman gave up just four hits in the five innings and walked two.

Meanwhile, the Wolves took care of business early on the offensive end again, scoring four runs in the first inning and four more in the second.

In the first inning, Dorn belted a two-run double and Jamie Becker laced a two-run single. In the second inning, Dorn hit a two-run home run, Hallmark bunted home a run and Sutherland scored on a wild pitch.

Dorn had two hits in the game and drove in four runs, while Amanda Fleer also had a pair of hits, giving her a 5-for-6 day. Whitney Lee was 2-for-2 in the second game.

Kirstin Davidson had two of SMU’s four hits in the contest.
