No. 10 Stanford Holds On for Win Over Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team nearly rallied in the ninth, getting the tying run on first, but No. 10 Stanford held on for a 4-2 victory in front of 2,688 at Goss Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Daniel Robertson singled to right field with one out in the ninth inning to get it started for the Beavers. Chris Hopkins came to bat following a walk to Garrett Nash and singled to right field, loading the bases for the Beavers.

Lonnie Lechelt proceeded to pitch hit for Joey Wong and hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Robertson and putting Stanford’s to two runs. Jason Ogata came to bat as the potential tying run with two outs and hit a fly ball to left field ending the comeback attempt for Oregon State.

Wong and Jordan Lennerton both had two hits to pace the Beavers. Lennerton had the team’s other RBI, in addition to Lechelt, when he doubled home a run in the second inning to give OSU a 1-0 lead.

Stanford ( 17-11 overall, 6-3 Pacific 10 Conference) starting pitcher Jeffery Inman went 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on seven hits. He walked three and struck out two in a winning effort to put his record at 5-0 this season.

Jorge Reyes started his eighth game of the season for Oregon State, allowing two hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings. He retired the first 12 batters he faced, and ended the game with three walks and six strikeouts. He did not figure in the decision.

Mark Grbavac took the loss for Oregon State (16-12, 4-5). He allowed one hit and one run in 1/3 of an inning after coming on in relief of Kraig Sitton in the sixth.

After retiring the first 12 batters he faced, Reyes got into a jam in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and not outs. Reyes got himself out of the inning with three consecutive outs.

Reyes left the game with two outs in the sixth with a runner on second. The runner on second eventually scored to tie the game at 1-1 and was the only run credited to Reyes.

The Cardinal added one in the seventh and two more in the ninth to take a 4-1 lead.

Michael Marshall pitched the final 2/3 innings of the ninth for Stanford and recorded his first save of the season.

Oregon State next takes the field Tuesday against the University of Portland at PGE Park with a first pitch time of 6:30 p.m. PST. The game can be heard on the Beaver Sports Network, Beaver Nation Online (www.osubeavers.com) and Yahoo! Sports.
