BERKLEY, Calif. - Oregon State showed sparks in the late innings but came up short against No. 22 Cal, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Levine-Fricke Field. Oregon State (25-21, 3-6 Pac-10) struggled offensively early, earning its six hits beginning in the fifth inning with sophomore Tarah Black (Portland, Ore.) leading the way with a pair of singles, leaving 12 total runners on base. Cal (34-16, 3-6 Pac-10) catcher Julie Meyer put the Bears on the board early with her one-out two-run home run over right field, scoring Katie Vickers who led off the second inning with a double. Oregon State threatened in the top of the fifth loading the bases behind three straight hits by sophomores Black, Alana Ford (Chula Vista, Calif.) and Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) but three ground outs by the Beavers ended the inning, leaving three stranded with Cal still up 2-0. The Golden Bears earned another run in the bottom of the fifth. But Oregon State loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth with the tying run on first, but a ground out ended the run with the Beavers still behind by three. Junior Paige Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) led off the seventh inning with a bunt single before advancing to second after junior DeAnn Young (Camarillo, Calif.) was hit by pitch to bring up the tying run. But the rally came up short as a ground out ended the game for the Beavers. Sophomore pitcher Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) was charged with the loss after pitching 4.0 innings, putting her record at 16-16, while Cal’s Marissa Drewrey earns the complete-game win, improving her record to 22-10. Redshirt freshman Stefanie Draper (Parkdale, Ore.) pitched 2.0 innings for the Beavers in relief. Oregon State returns to the OSU Softball Complex next weekend as it hosts Oregon on Friday and Saturday in the Dodge Civil War Series. Start times are scheduled for 4:00 and 1:00 p.m. Source: OSU Athletics
