Apr-12-2008 05:02Corban - College of Idaho Split Softball DoubleheaderSalem-News.com SPORTSWith the split, the Warriors improve to 9-16 overall, 6-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.
SALEM, Ore. - Junior Karlee Sisler (Corvallis, Ore.) and senior Lindsay Batey (Aloha, Ore.) each blasted three-run home runs to lead Corban's softball team to a thrilling 11-9 victory in the night cap, as the Warriors split the doubleheader with The College of Idaho Friday at Warrior Field. The two teams combined for 34 runs in the two contests, as the ‘Yotes prevailed 11-3 in the day’s opening game prior to the second-game heroics of Sisler and Batey. The offenses were hot for both teams, as the lineups combined for five home runs on the afternoon. Game #1 – The College of Idaho 11, Corban 3 In the opener, The College of Idaho scored the game’s opening run via an RBI single before Corban got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Freshman Jessie Jones (Gladstone, Ore.) hit a lead off single to short before advancing to third via a walk and a ground out. Jones then came home on a wild pitch by C of I’s Katie Zillner to knot the game at 1-all. The College of Idaho then scored five unanswered runs highlighted by Donnae Carrell’s solo lead off home run in the third inning. Corban put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, as freshman Jennifer Kollaer (Albany, Ore.) belted an RBI-single to left field to score Jones from second base. The very next batter -- Batey -- singled to right field to bring Kollaer across the plate. Following Corban’s two-run fifth inning, the ‘Yotes finished the game with five more unanswered runs, punctuated by Daniyelle Villyard’s two-run home run to left field in the top of the seventh inning. Offensively, Kollaer led the Warriors with two hits and an RBI in three at-bats as Batey was one of five Warriors to register a hit. In the circle for Corban, Kollaer pitched all seven innings for the Warriors, allowing 11 runs (four earned) on 12 hits. For The College of Idaho, Carrell paced the ‘Yotes attack as the lead off hitter went 3-for-5 at the plate including her first home run of the season. Zillner threw a complete game for The College of Idaho, allowing three runs (all earned) on seven hits to go with a game-high nine strikeouts. Game #2 – Corban 11, The College of Idaho 9 Corban’s offense came alive early in the night cap, as Kollaer drew a one-out walk before advancing to third base on Batey’s single to left center. Two batters later, Sisler hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season -- a towering three-run blast -- that sliced inside the left field foul pole to bring Batey and Kollaer home. In the top of second inning, The College of Idaho scored two unearned runs on a Corban fielding error to pull within one. The Warrior offense stayed hot in the bottom of the inning, as Corban filled the bases with no outs before senior Jennifer Childers (Winston, Ore.) and junior Megan Gaylord (Portland, Ore.) scored on a fielder’s choice by Kollaer. With everyone safe on the play, the bases remained full for Batey until Jones slid home from third on a wild pitch. Batey then singled to third to score Kollaer for Corban’s fourth and final run of the inning. The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the third inning, as Childers crossed the plate on a wild pitch to increase Corban’s lead to six runs (8-2) before the ‘Yotes responded with a five-run fourth inning highlighted by matching two-RBI singles by Zillner and Villyard. The College of Idaho completed their comeback in the top of the sixth inning, as Villyard registered another RBI single to score pitch-runner Amanda Enrico from second base to knot the score at 8-all and set the stage for Batey. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Jones and Kollaer tallied one-out singles to put runners on first and second as Batey stepped to the plate. With another well-swung bat, Batey lofted the ball high over the left-center fence for her fourth home run and third game-winning four-bagger of the season. Batey’s three-run shot proved to be the difference, as Corban pitcher Erin Sailors (Anchorage, Alaska) held the ‘Yotes to one run on a solo home run by Stacy Smith to claim the victory by the final margin. Jones, Batey, and Sisler all shined at the plate for the Warriors, as Jones and Batey each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Batey also registered a game-high four RBIs, while Jones reached home twice. Overall, seven Warriors tallied at least one hit in the game. Sailors picked up the win for the Warriors, allowing nine runs (two earned) on just five hits in seven innings while registering a game-high 10 strikeouts. With the win, Sailors improves to 7-6 on the season and jumps above .500 in the win-loss column for the first time in her college career. The College of Idaho was lead offensively by the multiple hit efforts of Zillner and Villyard. The duo combined for five RBIs in the night cap, while C of I's pitcher Brooke Judy went the distance, allowing eleven runs (all earned) on twelve hits. With the split, the Warriors improve to 9-16 overall, 6-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action. Meanwhile, The College of Idaho moves to 15-14 overall, 6-8 in CCC play. Corban will take the field again on Saturday, April 12th, when they host the visiting Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 11:00am on Warrior Field.
