PCL: Halsey, River Cats Shut Down Beavers

SACRAMENTO - Brad Halsey struck out eight over 5 2/3 scoreless innings, and Kevin Melillo was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs scored as the Sacramento River Cats defeated the Portland Beavers 6-2 Wednesday at Raley Field.

Jeremy Brown hit a two-run home run as part of Sacramento’s three-run second inning, and Antonio Perez doubled and had two RBIs for the River Cats (4-3).

Halsey (1-0) yielded four hits and walked two to get his first win of the season.

Portland starter Ryan Ketchner (0-1), who struck out six, gave up four runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in the loss.

Brett Dowdy, Royce Huffman and Luke Carlin each had two hits for the Beavers, who avoided their second shutout of the season with two ninth-inning runs.

The two teams conclude their series Thursday night at Raley Field. First pitch is 7:05 PM.

The Beavers return to Portland for their home opener on Friday, when they take on the Fresno Grizzlies at 7:05 PM.

The first 3,000 fans through the gates Friday night will receive a 2007 schedule magnet, while the first 500 fans will receive a Friday the 13th black baseball.
