(NEWBERG, Ore.) - Getting the home portion of their 2009 season started on a good note, the George Fox University Bruins swept the Walla Walla University Wolves 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-17) in a non-conference women’s volleyball match Tuesday night here at the Wheeler Sports Center’s Miller Gym.
The Bruins never trailed in set one after jumping out to an early 6-1 lead, a block by Kaitlyn Maddams and Lyndsay Hovee and a kill by Hovee capping a 5-0 run. The home team stretched the lead to 19-9 on a service ace by Jennifer Panico and three times led by 11 points, closing out the set with a winner by Stephanie Kerr.

(COTTAGE GROVE, Ore.) - Jason Meyers felt like a few wins slipped away from him last year and one of those was at Cottage Grove Speedway in Oregon. His goal coming into this season was to make up for as many of those near misses as possible and he did exactly that on Tuesday night at the high-banked ¼-mile winning a duel over fellow California native Tim Kaeding.
Meyers took the lead on the 17th lap following a lap-16 restart where he nearly took the lead a couple of times en route to his second consecutive World of Outlaws win and his seventh of the season.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - Needing a sweep of Cal State Fullerton (6-1) to win the Active Ankle Challenge, the Oregon State volleyball team (5-2) did just that, winning in set scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-14, Monday afternoon in legendary Gill Coliseum, handing the Titans their first loss of the season.
“It was a great comeback after last night’s match,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We control our destiny, and we knew we needed to win, 3-0, to win the tournament. Great play by Bree after she’d been sick all weekend.”

The Bearcats will face Warner Pacific University at home on Sept. 12. (OLYMPIA, Wash.) - The Willamette University volleyball team defeated Evergreen State College in straight sets on Monday, Sept. 7, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17. The Bearcats hit .227 for the match compared to Evergreen's -.056 hitting percentage.
Willamette started off strong, taking the lead 10-7 in the first set and never looking back. The Bearcats closed out the first set with consecutive kills by Julie Stutzman (MH, Jr., Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) and Jessie McGraw (OH, Sr., Gaston, OR/Corban College).

The match was the first for Oregon State in the Active Ankle Challenge.
“I think it was a good start to the tournament and to be able to go deep into our bench,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “The key is showing our depth because of missing a pair from our lineup.”

(Eugene, Ore. ) - Junior Jennifer Macias (Hermiston, Ore.) led the Oregon State women’s cross country team past Portland State, 17-43, with her fifth place overall finish, but the Beavers were edged by Oregon, 19-37, in the Pre’s Trail Preview double duals on Friday evening at Alton Baker Park.
Macias finished the 4,800-meter race in 17:19.7, followed closely by junior Hannah Soza-Hodgkinson (Forest Ranch, Calif.), who finished in 17:24.8. Redshirt sophomore Laura Carlyle (Kelowna, British Columbia) and junior Abby Chesimet (Astora, Ore.) rounded out the top 10 overall for Oregon State, finishing eighth and ninth, while junior Kambria Schumacher (Sweet Home, Ore.) completed the scoring runners for both duals, finishing 16th.
