(KEIZER) - On Sunday, an officer from the Keizer Police Department attempted to stop a blue 1990 Chevrolet Astro van for a traffic violation. When the officer initiated the traffic stop using his emergency lights and siren, the driver of the van continued to drive and would not stop. The driver of the van led the police on a 2.5 mile vehicle pursuit, which involved officers from the Keizer Police and the Salem Police Departments. The vehicle finally stopped in the 3800 block of Hawthorne Avenue in Salem, where the passenger of the vehicle fled on foot. The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Ellena Juan was taken into custody without incident. Officers discovered that Juan’s four month old infant son was in a baby carrier unsecured between the front seats of the van during the pursuit. Officers from both agencies searched the area for the vans passenger, but he was unable to be located. Police do not know who the passenger is or why he ran. Juan was arrested and transported to the Marion County Corrections Facility, where she was lodged on Attempting to Elude and Reckless Endangering. Juan’s bail is set at $15,000. Juan’s son, who was unharmed in the incident, was placed into protective custody. | Support Salem-News.com: Quick Links

Albert, since you don't disagree with me, by default you agree. Just for the record. My observations come with mixed emotions. And to top it off, I bet the money spent to arrest the mother, transport her to the Marion County Corrections Facility, charge her with attempting to elude and reckless endangering, would be better spent to help her. A 4 month old needs breast feeding and touch not "protective custody". But the ham handed way this is going, we'll have the perfect family to justify higher taxes for our justice system for years to come. And it's typical. By the way, what other activity besides not using a child carrier was deemed reckless before. And not stopping isn't eluding anyway. She might have been driving on purpose to allow the runner to elude. So she didn't speed or anything right?

I don't disagree with you eq. Many people forget that many lives have been lost including officers in an unnecessary pursuit. If you have the plate there is no reason to play Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood. You can find them later in a safe way.

4 months old and already a drama. Juan needs counseling for parenting and she needs to id the runner who was hiding something that would harm them.
