(Tualatin, Ore.) - Twenty-four local men and women will be sworn-in as Volunteer Firefighters at a Graduation Ceremony hosted by Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Clackamas County Fire District No. 1. This event follows their passage of a rigorous, ten week, 150-hour Volunteer Recruit Academy that began last July. It happens Monday, October 1st at 7:00 PM at the Al Kader Shrine Center, 25100 S.W. Parkway Avenue in Wilsonville. The Academy was a joint venture between Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue and Clackamas County Fire District Number 1. Karen Eubanks, Public Information Officer for Tualitan Fire, says Karen Eubanks with Tualitan Fire. She says participants were exposed to all facets of the fire service, including live fire, self-contained breathing apparatus, mass casualty incidents, blood borne pathogens, public education, ground ladders, wildfire and hazardous materials awareness. "Depending on where they reside, the new Volunteers will be assigned to either Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue or Clackamas County Fire District No. 1. They may staff fire stations during peak activity periods, provide rehab and fire-watch services at an incident scene, assist in salvage and overhaul tasks, and respond to emergency incidents if needed," Eubanks added. TVF&R and CCFD#1 have two of the largest contingents of volunteer firefighters in Oregon. TVF&R's 100 active volunteers are based at stations in Aloha, Sherwood, Skyline, Tigard, West Linn, and Wilsonville, while CCFD#1's 60 volunteers are based at the Clackamas, Holcomb/Outlook, Redland, Beavercreek, Springwater/Logan, and Clarkes/Highland stations.
