(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Two Moroccan journalists are being denied permission to leave their hotel, subjected to hours of interrogation and their documents withheld, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemns these measures by Algerian authorities and demands their freedom of movement be restored.

"Algerian authorities must respect journalists' right to freedom of movement across the country, especially free access to conflict zones so the public can be properly informed," said Younes Mjahed, IFJ Senior Vice President. "The treatment meted out to our colleagues is not acceptable. It constitutes a violation of press freedom and shows a repressive attitude against professionals who are only doing their job."

According to Syndicat national de la presse marocaine (SNPM) , IFJ Moroccan affiliate, on September 18 Mohamd Slimani and Hassan Tigbadar were arrested by Algerian security forces. The journalists were in the area to report on the visit to the camps by Mustapha Salma Ould Sidi Mouloud. The two reporters were questioned by Police for over three hours at the airport and their documents seized by officials.

SNPM is insisting the lifting of movement restrictions and demands the end of repeated interrogations. IFJ denounces the failure of Algerian authorities to heed the call from SNPM for the release of the journalists and demands a speedy response to resolve the matter.

"We appealed to the authorities in Algeria from day one for the release of our colleagues. Unfortunately, they are still being held and being questioned every hour by various officials from the police, the gendarmerie and the army," added Mjahed. "This situation must end."

Alysha Atma spends many hours working on projects that support and benefit the beleaguered people of African nations who spend way too much time off the western media's radar. This writer explains that she is a culmination of all her experiences, most importantly knowledge she says, and all that she still needs to learn; lessons of love, laughter and the extraordinary giving of both young and old. She says she has the enormous fortune of learning from the best; every person around her, and the amazing strength and fortitude of those she has never met but will always strive to listen to. "I continue to work and write because I believe in the power of community and the power of one, both contradictory to each other and yet can move together in a very powerful way. I feel a responsibility to use my place, freedoms and connections here in the US to stand up and yell for those who need my voice and actions. I have seen such strength in my fellow humans that I cannot even begin to comprehend, they have traveled distances, have gone without food, water, shelter and safety for days and weeks at a time. I have a responsibility as a fellow human to put our common humanity before anything else. Everyone deserves to look towards tomorrow, to dream of a safe future and to have a peaceful present." What's the difference between a Journalist and a soldier? One carries pens and ink while the other's equipped with guns and bullets. Under fire from the enemy who will survive the longest? The soldiers impact is instant but the writer's has to go to print, the associate editor, editor, proof department, editor... Writers are soldiers they just reach more people with less deadly firepower yet more impact. Whew! I know that doesn't sound like it makes sense or cents but it's true.
