(SALEM) - Governor Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff on Friday, in memory of Army Sergeant Nathaniel B. Lindsey of Troutdale. Lindsey, 38, died on September 9th supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Shajoy, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Oregon National Guard 41st Brigade Combat Team of Portland. "Sergeant Lindsey bravely served his country with honor and courage. We send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Lindsey's friends and family," said Governor Kulongoski. "The men and women of the Oregon National Guard are a key part of our nation's armed forces. When not serving, these dedicated soldiers are our educators, business owners, truck drivers, farmers, grocery clerks, and sales representatives; they represent all walks of life. We continue to keep them all in our thoughts and prayers."

Lest we not forget that soldiers who serve are soldiers period. National Guard or not, all servicemembers deserve the same, however, if that is the case, why not just hang the flag at half mast until OIF and OEF are over. Why should we desensitize the solemness of hanging the flag at half mast? Why is this one soldier any better than the other service men and women who have died so far? No disrespect intended, I served in Sadr City and lost several friends, but nobody offered honors like this. C'mon people lets be more realistic. Its like giving State Funerals to Joe Citizen. Its really not proper.

My condolence to the family of Sergeant Lindsey. Operation Enduring Freedom is another euphemism. It is really "Operation Install Another Military Base in Yet Another Country" even though we did our job to dismantel the training camps that were created to hurt the U.S. Why are we there now? This is all a new form of colonization using terms that Americans fall for. I remember when Bush (The Spokesman for the Global Elite) wanted to change the name of "French Fries" to "Freedom Fries." How stupid is that? "German Fries" are now called "Home Fries" since the First World War. How stupid is that? We were not at war with France and even if we were, should we change the name of a potato? A country like France has their politics, perspective and pride. They are not coming to this land because they love their land. Just because people do not have our culture and politics does not give us the right to insult them, look down on them or try to Americanize them. I do not know about you but if I ever travel to an exotic place, I do not want to see a McDonalds or even hear the word hamburger even though my mother was a real "Hamburger" from Hamburg. Let's call everything "Freedom" or "Patriot." He went to the Freedom Mall. She likes the colors of her new Freedom Dress. Are you going to Patriot Stadium? No I do not have time, I have to pick up my daughter at Patriot High School. Thank God you are doing it because I am bringing in my new 2007 Freedom to get an oil change. This week I have to go to Patriot, Michigan for a conference. Jingoism is not my bag. I doubt that it is your bag either. If you do not know what "jingoism" means, look it up in the online dictionary.

I am glad this is happening. Ido believe we need to realize how wonderful the National Guard is. I dont often think of them as regular people in all firleds of endeavors...your article really brought that back to mind. A National Guardsman could be anyone from any walk of life..defending his country ..could be our neighbor or doctor, or anyone we meet...not necessarily in uniform. Of course we value thos in a uniform too...they are the more obvious until we see a photo today of this fine National Guardsman. May we take time Friday to value and reappreciate all the men and women who defend this wonderful country.
