Sep-19-2010 03:21TweetFollow @OregonNews American Indian IPoetry by Luke Easter Salem-News.comEntire nations were eliminated, others were routed and forced onto unfamiliar land, we must never forget.
(CLEVELAND) - For all of the talk about being American and taking exception to issues involving migration, etc., many of us forget that only a small number of people actually really trace their heritage to this great nation. They are people who in spite of all of the abuse and genocide, have remained and taken back a great deal of control. The United States Cavalry was not here to make friends with the natives. Entire nations were eliminated, others were routed and forced onto land that was much worse than what they were accustomed to. There was abuse and death from so many sources, with disease high on the list, matched only by the cruelty of a society committing genocide on a native population. In the winner-loser sense, the United States "won" a lot of land that belonged to people who were here first. In many ways that is simply how it happened, and sometimes that type of war for land mentality is quickly and easily accepted. The plight of the Native Americans however, unfortunately, is not one of those stories. _______________________________________________________There’s only one real true American, Unlike the movies, the Indian never started the fight, Even going to court in a lawsuit the attorneys are prepared, Was the Indian really thought of after the death of Sitting Bull? Land that was stolen because some prospectors found gold, This always happens in politics so I kinda, sorta, understand, I thought about this due to the fuss made about a certain Prophet, Why slight Islam or any of the other secular religious nations? Yes, there’s the knucklehead claiming it’s protected by free speech, We celebrate Lincoln and Washington on Presidents day, It was the Navajo Code Talkers, who fearlessly turned the tide, American statesmen are honored on ones, twenties, fifties, fives, tens, It’s 2009, there is a lot of animosity towards illegal immigration, Upon their arrival the Indians welcomed Pilgrims into their tents, And, the Africans not murdered or mutilated were eventually sold, Ruthless tactics by the King of England is why the British left there, 1492 upward the “Doctrine Of Discovery” was used to deal with tribes, Was Thomas Jefferson having problems with drafts for the Constitution? Yeah! This is the great America, land of the free and home of the brave, Boys assigned to the reservation the English Language they had to speak, As for the girls, well everyone knows what happens after planting the seed, I am not being cynical, resentful or saying it just happened to Indians, relax, 8/10/09 Kids are not allowed access to school @ San Felipe Del Rio, 01/01/10, The Hal Lindsey Report asks, “Does the flag still wave?” Choctaw, Kiowa, Chipewyan, Tanaina, Chickasaw, Dakota Sioux, Not one good thing of value was given, the government lied and took, For whomever reading this thinks it’s plain old hogwash & none of it is true, There were 18 Medals of Honor awarded to members of the US 7th Calvary, After World War II, there is a movement by many politicians to do all they can, Reparations, “The Civil Liberties Act of 1988” supplied payment and here is why, We give millions to and praise athletes, who are MVP, by Luke Easter ============================================= Luke Easter is a poet who writes about things that are very close to the heart of Salem-News.com. Another former U.S. Marine, Luke heals the world with an approach that reaches people on a different level, one known for centuries, yet too often forgotten in the one we live in. We live in a world of social & economic injustice. The main reason for founding America in the first place was to relieve the oppression of the King of England. Patrick Henry said it best, “give me liberty or give me death.” And yet, all too often death seems to be the only way out. Why is there such a high suicide rate especially among teens, in the land of the free & the home of the brave? What makes headlines? Good news? Ha! More depressing stories than anything else. I feel poetry takes an edge off the hurt of bad news while still delivering it but in a, “glitzy” sort of way. Giving a different perspective. Kind of like slap in the face as opposed to a knife in the back. At least with the slap you’ll live to see another day and you will know whom it’s from. I wasn’t here for the beginning of the world but at 59, I just might be here for the end. Even though it’s still a knife, rhyme poetry helps to dull the blade. And that’s my job. Vic is correct, do you know how many countries queen eliz owns? The conquest for world domination has been around for centuries, and is more alive today than ever. It is more advanced, it uses indoctrination thru education, a bought and paid for media, deception and fear (iraq for instance)and of course, still uses billions of dollars in advanced weaponry. They have central banks all over the world that control the money supply, probably their most powerful tool of all. They can take down a country overnight, such as Argentina and Iceland. During the 2008 bailout, they held our entire government hostage. I call them 'economic terrorists'. cap and trade/carbon tax, is their next big goal, but people are beginning to wake up to their deceitful tactics. The murder of the American Indians, is a piece of the overall puzzle, and the puzzle picture is becoming much clearer. Altho, being of Amerian Indian decent, I appreciate the author reminding people what happened to the American Indians, in a more honest and truthful matter.

Go to the following webpage to read a little about the American Indian Movement. John Trudell is often at those hemp festivals you all like so well and many probably do not know that his family was murdered to try to shut him up. He was the national president of the American Indian Movement and my favorite poet. Be sure to sign the petition to free Leonard Peltier who has been a political prisoner in the USA for 30 years. The opression of native americans is not just ancient history, it continues to this moment. dickshovel.com/JTT.html

fredamea, I think you will find that your understanding is a myth. They would not need to be so flagrant as to take infected articles. But regardless, wouldn't the soldiers have been petrified about handling those same articles?

I understand during the 1800's Our Military/Cavalry used one of the first recorded acts of biological terrorism against Native American's by bringing them blankets, quilts etc Intentionally infused with diseases they had never been exposed to such as Small-Pox. Many died as a result.

Excellent article Luke. You are 100% right in that people forget just how badly the native American was treated by our government. Thanks for reminding us all.
