Willamette Rowing Teams Participate in Portland Fall Classic

Willamette Bearcats

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The Willamette University men's and women's rowing teams participated in the Portland Fall Classic on Sunday. The race was sponsored by Windermere Real Estate and hosted by the Rose City Rowing Club, the Station L Rowing Club and the Portland Boathouse.

Willamette competed in five events and captured first place in two of those races. The women's open junior varsity 8+ completed the course in a time of 18:52.54 to finish in first place. The WU boat defeated the second place Lewis & Clark College team by nearly two minutes, as L&C finished with a time of 20:57.85.

The men's open novice 4+ also finished in first place. The men completed the course with a time of 10:23.14. Second place went to L&C, which finished with a time of 10:38.04.

The women's varsity 8+ earned a third place finish in its race. The Bearcats completed the course in 18:17.66. First place went to Oregon State University. The Beavers earned a time of 17:36.53.

Willamette also finished third in the men's varsity 8+ race. OSU won the event with a time of 15:41.44. Willamette earned a time of 17:02.53 in the race.

The Bearcats also participated in the women's open novice 8+ race. WU finished second with a time of 11:46.38. Pacific Lutheran University achieved first place with a time of 11:41.70.

Participants raced on the Willamette River in downtown Portland. The course was 5,000 meters for college, open, junior and masters 8+'s, 4+'s and 2x's. Novices in 4+'s and 8+'s raced a 2,800 meter course.

The Portland Fall Classic was the final event on the fall schedule for the Willamette rowing team. They will resume action in the spring.
