Fatal Pedestrian Vehicle Crash - Highway 99E Just North of Salem

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers are continuing the investigation into Saturday evening's fatal pedestrian-involved crash on Highway 99E just north of Salem. The crash resulted in the death of a 42-year old transient whose name is withheld pending next of kin notification.

According to OSP Sergeant Bob Charpentier, on October 30, 2010 at approximately 6:20 p.m. a 1996 Nissan pickup driven by 81-year old Gilberto Medina Sebastion of Salem, was southbound on Highway 99E near Blossom Avenue NE when it struck the pedestrian near the center of the two southbound lanes.

The pedestrian reportedly was trying to cross the highway in a partially lit area from the east side to the west side when he was struck.

After impact, the pickup driver continued south a short distance before returning back to the scene to assist until police and medical personnel arrived.

Medina Sebastian was not injured. He was using safety restraints.

OSP troopers from the Salem Area Command office are continuing the investigation. Marion County Sheriff's Office, Salem Fire Department, and ODOT assisted at the scene.

The southbound lanes were blocked until about 9:30 p.m.
