(SILVERTON, Ore.) - The Silverton Fire District responded at approximately 11:00 pm Sunday night to a residential structure fire in the 1200 block of Maple St. in Silverton. When the first unit arrived on scene, moderate smoke could be seen coming from the structure. The house was occupied by four residents, two adults and two children, when the blaze started in the wall next to the chimney for the wood stove.

The family members evacuated the home and called 911 when they saw the smoke and the smoke alarms went off. The Silverton Fire District responded with 5 fire engines and one aerial truck on this structure fire. Over 23 firefighters were needed to control and investigate the fire. The monetary loss of the structure and the contents is estimated at $60,000 in damages to the structure and its contents.

One exterior wall and the attic was moderately too heavily damaged. The home was equipped with smoke alarms which sounded when the fire started. It is imperative that all homes and apartments have working smoke alarms and that they are installed correctly in accordance with the manufacturer and that they are tested on a regular basis as these were. Family members are staying at an unknown location. There were no injuries to the residents or firefighters. The cause of the blaze has not been determined. However, the fire is not suspicious in nature.
