(OREGON CITY) - A ten-year old Mount Scott Elementary School in Happy Valley has been arrested for bringing a handgun to school. The child now faces charges of Threat of Harm, first-degree Theft and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. The school is located at 11201 SE Stevens Road in Happy Valley. School officials say that around 9:30 AM, a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office deputy responded to a report of student who had brought a 9mm, semi-automatic handgun to the start of school. This weapon was discovered as unloaded, with an empty magazine. The Principal of this Mount Scott Elementary School, Maureen Callahan, says she is very pleased with the admirable reporting of this weapon at the school. Callahan states she was first informed by a student that a handgun had been brought to the school by another classmate. Callahan says she responded immediately and contacted the student and found the handgun in a backpack. She says they separated the weapon from the student and placed it in a secure location. Callahan then contacted law enforcement; which resulted in the weapon and juvenile suspect being taken into custody. The principal says she is very proud of this conscientious student who first brought this sensitive information to her immediate attention. Later in the day, this principal personally addressed several of the classrooms praising this exceptional reporting practice. The reporting Deputy Sheriff also indicates this student's Grandmother and father had been summoned to the school by school administrators and were present during this arrest procedure. This student was interviewed, arrested and transported to the Clackamas County Juvenile Reception Center, in Oregon City.
