(SALEM) - Volunteers are needed to construct the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom War Memorial being built behind the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, 700 Summer St. NE, in Salem. The memorial will honor the sacrifices of those Oregon service members who have lost their lives during Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The Afghan-Iraqi Freedom War Memorial will be dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11th, 2006. Volunteers are needed to ensure the memorial is completed in time for the dedication. This is a non-paid, volunteer opportunity to pay respect to service members who sacrificed their lives in service to our country. Any amount of time volunteers can offer their assistance is greatly appreciated. Skilled and un-skilled laborers are needed to help pour concrete, lay bricks, lay sod and assist landscaping, among other jobs. Construction is being done from 7:00 AM until dark, seven days a week, throughout the month of October until the memorial is completed. To volunteer please contact Bill McMichael, project manager, at 971-563-8549 or MJ Kesterson, at 503-930-9097. This is a great opportunity for companies to donate some of their workers to help. Bring your company banner and it will get hung up on the fence at the site for all to see and photos will get posted once a week by me to show progress and who some of the companies are. Photos can be found by clicking on the War Memorial link at the bottom of www.IraqWarHeroes.org . Treat it like you would a paid professional job and down the years to come, you have bragging rights... Your company helped build this piece of history which forever will be a tribute to our fallen heroes. Thank you all that are helping out with this!!! If you can't help on the construction site, but can donate disposable tools like gloves, hard hats..., and food, drink...etc. If you think you got something they may need, please let them know. That would be cool too.
