(SALEM) - A Salem woman has been charged with Murder in the death of her 5-month old son, who died less than a week after injuries that he received October 6th. Prosecutors say the woman engaged in a pattern and practice of assault and torture that led to the baby's death.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office began an investigation of life threatening injuries inflicted upon Kevin Salazar-Olmos in October just after the assault that led to little Kevin being hospitalized at Salem Hospital.

He was subsequently transferred to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland where he remained until his death days later, on Friday, October 13th, 2006.

Kevin’s mother, 17-year old Denisse Montserrat Jimenez-Eugenio, aka Raquel Salazar-Olmos, was arrested and charged with Assault in the Second Degree and Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree on Thursday. Those charges related to Kevin’s injuries. At that time Kevin had not yet been pronounced dead.

Today Denisse Montserrat Jimenez-Eugenio was arraigned in Marion County Circuit Court and charged with her son’s murder.

The information alleges that “the defendant, on or about October 6th, 2006, did unlawfully and recklessly, under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to the value of human life, cause the death of Kevin Salazar-Olmos, a child under 14 years of age, said defendant having previously engaged in a pattern and practice of assault and torture of Kevin Salazar-Olmos.”

In Oregon, the crime of Murder is punishable by a sentence of life imprisonment, with a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years. Marion County Darin Tweedt says further information relating to the facts of the case will not be released.

The defendant will appear in court at 8:30 AM on October 25th to be arraigned on any indictment returned by the grand jury. This court appearance will be at the Marion County Court Annex. In the meanwhile, the defendant is being held without bail.

Note: This is a racist comment and they are not tolerated here, ever, and frankly I can't believe anyone even thinks the way this 'person' does.  For the record racism is dirty and evil, didn't anyone ever tell you that?  Creeps are not welcome here, get lost.

I to am a 17 year old and am expecting this November and am giving birth at the hospitol she gave birth in. And the thought of this discuss's me to pieces! I cry for her baby's death and look at her with hate. I don't know what kinda mother would do this to ANY baby or child. I am not racist, i don't care about that, i am Afican-American and the act that this came out of was her own will. But did they even investigate to see if the mother hurt her other child. This just sickins me!!!

the point here is that a mother killed her own flesh and blood....not that she is hispanic. Give the child some respect since he did not get much while he was alive! i dont care what race, creed, or color you are.....if you harm a child you need to be put to death!

The infant mortality rate South of the border is many times higher than what in the USA and that resulting from a lack of available medical care. Therefore, the level of concern over a child's death there does not bring the concern as it does in the United States. A child's death is more accepted as part of life, much as it was in the US as late as the 1920's. If there is any doubt just read the Mexican newspapers and see if such stories ever make print.

Born in jalisco mexico.. we have been together for 7 years are married bolth work, buying a home ,own three cars and more.. i think that stereo typing is lame and imature! It doesn't matter what color you are or the age it is the person... Mentaly... I love the hispanic culture and i think that they take better care of their children then alot of american familys do! but that is besides the point... This lady obviously has some problems..anyone who kills their child has problems.. it is not because they are mexican or black or white..The community is full of people who abuse there children every day..but our systems freinds and family are failin us by lettin it go on around them!1 i have seen some pretty nasty stuff myself and dhs does not really do their job!!! open your eyes!!

Child abuse happens on every side of the border, so I really don't think that slam on the hispanic culture was necessary. This is, most of all, an example of what not preventing pregnancy in teens will bring us. Parenting is not to be taken lightly, and less experience in advance is all the worse. If blame is to be found, how about all the people that knew this girl, probably even knew her potential, and didn't reach out to help the kids in her home. Look around. Who do you know?

The mother is a child and I hear has another "older" child. This is not unusual South of the Border and just part of the their culture that we are being told we must Embrace. Not!!

The mother looks like a child herself!!!
