Take Action to Free Tun Aung! No Political Prisoner Should be Left Behind in Burma¹s JailsSalem-News.com
Tun Aung M.D. is also a chairman of the Islamic Religious Affairs Council in Burma.
(LONDON) - The military-backed government in Burma still continues to use torture and arbitrary arrest against its civilians despite carrying out a limited reform process in the country.
Tun Aung is a respected community leader who has been arrested and jailed for political reasons. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison under the Section 24 (1) of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act for having 100 Chinese Yuan in his wallet, which was given to him by his daughter as a present. He was arrested in June 2012 as part of the Burmese government’s efforts to arrest and detain Muslim community leaders to stop them from talking to international observers and journalists.
Tun Aung is a 65-year-old medical doctor who is also a chairman of the Islamic Religious Affairs Council in Burma. He was arrested and accused of fuelling the communal riots in his hometown: Maungdaw, Rakhine State. He was sentenced to 3 years in prison and also charged with six other different counts including under The Myanmar Wireless Telegraphs Act for having a mobile phone with a SIM card from Bangladesh. He was transferred to Sittwe prison and his trial is still continuing for the remaining charges.
He is suffering from pituitary tumour and needs regular medication but he has been denied medical treatment. He is being kept in a small prison cell with no sanitation and ventilation. His family members are gravely concerned about his health but they are not allowed to visit him in prison.
Please go to the following link to write a letter to British Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire MP, asking him to take action to secure the immediate release of Tun Aung and for the release of all of Burma’s remaining political prisoners:
PS: Even if you have written to the Minister before, please write a letter again for each political prisoner. We need to keep up the pressure.
Don’t forget, you can support Wai Hnin’s skydive to raise funds to campaign for the release of all political prisoners here:
