(SALEM, Oregon) - A 21-year old Salem man was arrested after he was caught stealing a car in northeast Salem early this morning. Salem Police Officers and Marion County Sheriff's Deputies responded to area of Gill Street NE & Settlers Drive when an alert homeowner spotted what appeared to be an auto theft in progress.

The 911 call was received around 1:30am, Monday morning, when the caller saw a dark colored SUV drive into the area and park, and then a subject leaving the car and walking to a neighbor's driveway. The SUV parked with the engine running and the lights off. After several minutes, the homeowner saw the neighbor's red Honda Civic start up and leave the driveway. The SUV followed the vehicle from the area.

Deputy Cliff Self spotted the vehicles as they drove south on Cordon Road, about a mile from the scene. Upon seeing the deputy, the vehicles split up, with the Honda driving onto Middle Grove Road NE. The suspect eventually abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot. Deputy Jerry Wollenschlaeger and his canine, "Yo" were called to assist after a perimeter was set up. The suspect was taken into custody around 2:00am near Crestdale Court NE and Middle Grove NE. He was transported to the Salem Hospital for treatment of dog bites he received when he resisted arrest. The recovered vehicle has been returned to its owner.

The suspect was identified as Daniel L. Garcia, 21 of Salem. He is being held at the Marion County jail on charges of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, eluding, possession of burglary tools and interfering with police.

The second suspect driving the SUV was not located. The vehicle is described as being painted black with an aerosol "rattle can", and could be a Chevrolet S10. Anyone with information about this suspect's identity should call the Marion County Sheriffs' Office Tip Line at 503.540.8079.

The successful outcome of this incident was the result of cooperation between the alert homeowner and law enforcement. Residents are reminded that they can help us deter criminal behavior by reporting suspicious activity when they see it. Get Involved - Call 911 when you see a crime occurring.
