(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Fire experts say easterly winds could elevate the risk of wildfire in northwestern Oregon forests this weekend. Foresters caution hunters and other outdoor recreationists heading afield to be mindful of activities that could start a wildfire. "The forecast is for gusty winds," Oregon Department of Forestry's Neal Laugle said. "This dry air flow out of the east can suck the moisture out of forest fuels and make them susceptible to a spark from a campfire, vehicle exhaust or a discarded cigarette." The region has received some precipitation in recent weeks and the weather has cooled off. But fall rains haven't really set in yet. Grasses cured by the summer sun serve as the "kindling" for an accidental fire start. As they burn, these fine fuels heat and dry adjacent shrubs and trees, priming them to catch fire as well. "Once a fire gets going under these conditions," he said, "the wind can spread it fast." Wildland fire agencies are not at full strength in the fall, since some of the seasonal firefighters have returned to their regular jobs or college classes. A larger fire this time of year would stretch resources thin. Hunters and others planning weekend outings are advised to contact their local Oregon Department of Forestry office for current rules on campfires and warming fires, motorized vehicle use and smoking.
