(BOSTON) - Operation Red Dragonfly is one former Marine's journey to cross the country spreading the word about toxic military bases and other issues impacting Veterans and the general public.
Tim King rode just over 11,500 miles this summer giving talks about health issues that impact Veterans and the general public. It all takes off again in the summer of 2014 with Red Dragonfly II.
The goal is to save lives.
Once a person is aware of the fact that they served aboard a contaminated military base, they at least have a baseline chance of attaining proper medical care and screening.
Tim is using the coming months to prepare and upgrade his Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit for the 2014 event. Event Coordinator Sheree Evans in Missouri, is working on promotion and preparation for Red Dragonfly II.
Sheree's late Husband Tommy served as a Marine in Vietnam and died from Glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer connected to the use of Agent Orange during that SE Asian war.
Tim King says he greatly appreciates the support of people like Sheree Evans, and so many others who helped make Operation Red Dragonfly become reality.
He says people care greatly about their fellow Americans who served in uniform. "Most are horrified when they discover that the government used deadly toxins like TCE (Trichloroethylene) were used on every single U.S. military base. This is part of the reason 130 are listed as EPA Superfund sites, including the base where I served, Marine Corps Air Station El Toro."
Two of Tim's sons who were born while he served at El Toro, had major health complications in their first six months of life.
He says it took twenty years to discover that the boys were impacted by Tim's contamination with TCE.
"The government will not reveal this information unless it is forced to," King says.
"Camp Lejeune is one of the few places that found its way onto the contamination map and that is due to the efforts of dedicated people like retired Marine Jerry Ensminger, and male breast cancer survivor Mike Partain, whose family lived aboard the base."
Tim's ride along with the efforts of Sheree Evans, came to the attention of State Representative Lynn Morris in the Missouri House of Representatives. He pledged his support for the operation and offered to support our operation to reach Veterans.
