(DETROIT, Ore.) - A Powell Butte woman was killed Friday morning when she lost control of her car on an icy stretch of Highway 22 west of Santiam Pass and collided with an unloaded log truck, according to Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Derek Bischoff. Police say that at about 7:45 AM, a Honda Civic driven by 59-year old Lynne Angland, from Powell Butte, was westbound on Highway 22 near milepost 71 when her car lost control coming out of a right curve. The Honda veered into the eastbound lanes where it collided nearly head-on with an unloaded log truck driven by 31-year old John Freeman Jr., from Bend. Ms. Angland was pronounced deceased at the scene. She was using safety restraints. Mr. Freeman received minor injuries and was transported to Santiam Memorial Hospital. He was using safety restraints. "Ms. Angland was a prominent CPA in Prineville, with a history of service and commitment to the citizens of Crook County and Prineville. She has been chair of the Crook County Natural Resources Committee since its inception in 2002. The committee is a diverse group of citizens appointed by the Court and representing environmental interests, business interests, community interests, agricultural and forestry interests and agencies which works together to try and identify conflict in natural resources management without resort to litigation. It has been tremendously successful in both identifying issues, proposing solutions and raising the profile of natural resources in this rural community. Ms. Angland was also an important member and contributor to the Soroptomists of Prineville, a non-profit entity which operates senior services for the citizens of Crook County. The Prineville Senior Center was recognized a few years ago by the Wall Street Journal as the largest privately operated project of a Soroptomist Club in the United States Ms. Angland played an important role in keeping the organization fiscally healthy. Finally, Ms. Angland was an advocate for children and was engaged in innovative programs for promoting quality childcare in Crook County and the State of Oregon. At the time of her death she was traveling to a meeting of the Oregon Commission for Childcare in Salem of which she was vice chair. She was also the current treasurer of the Oregon Society of Certified Public Accountants. The county court joins the community of Crook County and Prineville in deeply mourning the premature death of Lynn Angland. Her contributions to Crook County are immeasurable and her loss is irreplaceable. She still had much to give. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends at this time." Police want to remind drivers that safe winter travel over the mountains is not easy: The trees that make for a scenic drive also block the sun's warming rays, a recipe for big trouble. "Don't exceed the speed limit, and keep the speed low consistently throughout the pass area, because one corner can be completely different then the next," Bischoff said. Highway 22 had minimum periodic closures on Hwy 22, but most traffic was getting through the area using one lane with ODOT's assistance. It was completely re-opened about 1:30 PM. OSP troopers from Salem and Albany offices are continuing the investigation. ODOT, US Forest Service and local fire personnel assisted at the scene.
