Nov-19-2011 14:52TweetFollow @OregonNews The Ordinary Man that Rwanda would like to silenceJennifer Fierberg, MSW Salem-News.comA hero does not blink in the face of danger; he looks it in the eyes and faces down the challenge. Paul Rusesabagina did this in 1994 and continues to do so today.
(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Paul Rusesabagina is known to much of the world as the manager of the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Rwanda, where he saved the lives of over 1,200 people during the 1994 genocide. Because of his actions, Mr. Rusesabagina has received many humanitarian awards including the Immortal Chaplains Prize for Humanity in 2000, the Wallenberg Medal of the University of Michigan in 2005 and the National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award also in 2005. In 2005 Mr. Rusesabagina also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from former President George Bush for his heroic actions in 1994, yet this humble man would gladly trade them all to have been able to save more lives from the butchers outside the door. Paul Rusesabagina received the prestigious Lantos Foundation Humanitarian Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. He kept over 1,200 Tutsi and moderate Hutus from being brutally slaughtered by the Interahamwe who murdered over 800,000 others in just 90 days. While this recognition should be seen as an honor to the small but mighty country of Rwanda, it has become glaringly obvious that the Government of Rwanda does not support the decision of the Lantos Foundation. This government sent their propaganda machine into high gear in order to stop him from receiving this award. Reports earlier this month falsely painted Mr. Rusesabagina as being barred from Canada to speak at an event he had been invited to, but the reality is, according to member of the Hotel Rwanda Foundation, he does not need a visa to enter Canada. He holds European citizenship and is not required to obtain a visa to travel to Canada. So, while the opposition celebrated his “visa denial” into Canada, the truth of the matter is that Mr. Rusesabagina cancelled his appearance due to the demands on his schedule and The Lantos Foundation Ceremony the following week. Much controversy has surrounded Mr. Rusesabagina for receiving this award. He has been vilified in the press the world over and in many Rwandan blogs by RPF supporters. One only has to read a few of the articles and posts to see that the narrative is the same in all of the negative press. This commonality leads one to believe that much of this writing is coming from the same script that has been provided by key members of the current ruling regime in Rwanda. While the money trail is not clear yet, time will show that money is at the root of this negative press. Of the many skeptics regarding the authenticity of Paul Rusesabagina and his actions at the Hôtel des Mille Collines, of which he has denied and disputed all allegations, one key allegation is that he demanded money from the people who lived in the hotel with him during this time. While it is true that money exchanged hands, he used the money he received to bribe the Interahamwe from killing his residents and his family, and he also used this money to provide supplies, food and to purchase alcohol as further bribes and peaceful discussion to those who came to the hotel to do harm to the residents there. During the preparations for filming the Academy Award nominated Hotel Rwanda the director of the film interviewed over 1000 people who resided at the hotel at the time of the genocide with Mr. Rusesabagina in order to verify his accounts of what happened there. All 1000 people confirmed that Mr. Rusesabagina was a hero and saved their lives. They corroborated his accounting of events without hesitation. Since 2008 when Mr. Rusesabagina began to speak out about the human rights violations committed by the ruling regime in Rwanda, suddenly the regime changed its opinion of Mr. Rusesabagina and began to tell a different tale of what happened at the Hôtel des Mille Collines. He began to be branded as a “genocidaire” and accused of funding terrorist organizations in the DRC. There is very sketchy evidence to these accusations and no one can seem to confirm these allegations which Mr. Rusesabagina has vehemently denied. Below is a transcript of the speech Mr. Rusesabagina gave at the Lantos Humanitarian Awards ceremony in which this reporter had the honor of attending. Rusesabagina Lantos Foundation Human Rights Award Speech 11/16/11 Congressional auditorium:
A hero does not blink in the face of danger; he looks it in the eyes and faces down the challenge. Paul Rusesabagina did this in 1994 and continues to do so today. Aluta continua _________________________________

Im fine with people debating the circumstances of the article and whether the facts are true/correct/accurate, however it seems that the editor that is replying to the comments doesn't want to debate peacefully the ideas in the argument. It only seems that he/she refuses to even listen to the other opinions.

Well, thanks Bosco for pointing that out.The 'brilliant'western reporter in this article and the so called human rights organisations are blind enough to have been lied to and inflitrated by enemy and thier operatives to downplay the success story of Rwanda.I can't help, but mention that yet again,l am offended by this story that seem to suggest that Rwandans can only write or tell the story designed and instructed by their gov't.On the other hand though,These reporters think that they know better than Rwandans themselves.I am compeled to bring to their attention that 'we' know better than any selfacclaimed humanitarian or expert where we came from, where we want to go,and we can do it without their help.Tutsi Genocide took place while the world stood aside debating whether to call a massacre or genocide The author wrote that the director of hotel Rwanda interviewed 1000survors before the fiction movie was made.I wonder how he selected those people!!I am sure Rusesabagina is the one who gave him names to be sampled. Rusesabagina is a tiger in a sheep's skin...An oputunist disguist as an odinery man.He solicits money from the west in the name of opfans and widows of tutsi genocide and uses the same money to fund interahamwe and XFAR who caused ophans and widows to be just that.Bytheway, they are the same evel people(xfar and interahamwe) still today, raping women and killing innocent people in DR Congo. Rusesabagina is a disgrace to Rwandans. He should should be ashamed of himself and his actions. If he real is an ordinery man,I challenge him to engage all Rwandans to resolve any issues that might be bothering him rather than the west. They never helped then and they can't now.

I want to clarify that Rusesabagina did not cancel his appearance next week at the "We Day" event in my home town of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was uninvited to speak to our children and young people because there was a concerted email campaign that many people, myself included (I am not a Rwandan)organized and took part in. Emails were sent to the Federal Minister of Immigration, Provincial Deputy Minister of Education, Free the Children, the Chairman of the MTS Centre where the event will take place, the Canadian Human Rights Museum, all the local television, radio and newspaper outlets. So don't swallow that "story" that Rusesabagina cancelled his appearance! We, the proud supporters of the survivors of Milles Collines, made this happen! And by the way no one from President Kagame's office called me to take part in our campaign. That's another one of Rusesabagina's lies! We don't want him in our city!

The world has discovered Paul is mere Hollywood hero not real to the Tutsi.Paul trust me you are an impostor, and the souls of Tutsi victims will always haunt you.
Editor: I'm sorry, were you serious? Who are you to judge this man? Some of you never can get on the side of humanity can you? Always one side or the other. You need to blame colonizing western governments for your problems, that is who caused it. The people of Rwanda were divided just like the people of Sri Lanka and so many other places, by moronic white men. You should bond together with your countrymen and have some self-respect.

UHMMM, Humanitarianism inside a non human. Paul please respect the souls of Tutsi victims who died without any crime but the way they were created.stop minimising and down playing the Tutsi'genocide cause their memory will haunt u for ever.

The author of this article is an ignorant person who doesn't know that in Rwanda 1 million Tutsi lost their lives because of who they were. Rusesabagina talking about 400,000 Hutus who lost their lives is the same story that never had facts but meant to be minimizing Tutsi who went through series of mayhem !
Editor: To the contrary, your remark is unwarranted and incorrect.
