(ALBANY, Ore.) - Ninety years ago tomorrow, the war to end all wars ceased and the world was granted peace. November 11th 1918 marked the cessation of hostilities that claimed millions upon millions of French, British, German and Belgian soldiers.

Over 50,000 Americans also died in World War One as well as soldiers from many other nations. November 11th is celebrated all around the world as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day.

The largest Veterans Day observance west of the Mississippi River, is the Albany Veteran's Day Parade in Oregon. Upwards of 40,000 people will attend the event featuring approximately 200 entries.

The event is organized and operated every year by the volunteer efforts of the Veterans Commemoration Association. The parade features veterans from wars past and present, marching units, military vehicles, and marching bands.

The parade starts at the overpass on Pacific Highway, then right on Lyons, left on 2nd to Ferry Street., left to 4th, ending at the Linn County courthouse at 300 3rd Avenue. SW. The Parade begins at 11:00 AM and lasts until 1:40 PM, and it is only one aspect of the events planned in Albany to celebrate our veterans.

Respect al Veterans! November 11, 2008 5:59 pm (Pacific time)

This is a wonderful event in Albany. This town for some reason has always been very respectful of veterans and they have a super bunch running their American Legion chapter. Many small towns all over America do similar events on this day, but the larger cities are becoming less and less observant. This I believe has a lot to do with the leadership you find in urban areas, many have never been in the military and many are anti-military types from the 60's and or their inculcated children. They will be the first to talk about their "rights" though; guess they figure those rights are just a matter of fact. One needs to be vigilant, some are talking about creating a civilian national security force. Now what's that sound like to you out there who know your WWI and pre-WWII history?

I marched in this parade while I was a West Albany Marching band participant in the early 1980's. It has always been an awesome event.. thank you Albany!
