Man Walking Along Highway 101 Struck and Killed by SUV

There have been 8 confirmed traffic-related fatalities in four separate crashes on Oregon highways at the halfway point of this year's holiday weekend.

(BANDON, Ore. ) - Oregon State Police are continuing the investigation into a fatal traffic crash early Sunday morning in which a man was killed after he reportedly walked into the northbound lane of Highway 101 just north of Bandon and was struck by a sport utility vehicle.

The victim's name is withheld pending next of kin notification.

At approximately 1:26 AM, Oregon State Police and Bandon Police and Fire departments received a report through Coos County 9-1-1 of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle on Highway 101 near milepost 251.

Preliminary investigation indicates the victim, a 42-year old male, was walking northbound along Highway 101 when he reportedly walked into the northbound lane and was struck by a 2005 Ford sport utility vehicle.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver, 50-year-old James Watson, from Coos Bay, was not injured.

Oregon State Police troopers from the Coos Bay Area Command office are continuing the investigation. No citations have been issued.

Bandon Police Department and Bandon Fire Department assisted at the scene. The northbound lane was closed until 4:00 AM.

Last year during the Memorial Day Holiday weekend eight people died during four separate fatal traffic crashes in Oregon.

Following this incident, there have been 8 confirmed traffic-related fatalities in four separate crashes on Oregon highways at the halfway point of this year's holiday weekend.

THE DECEASED VICTIM SHOULD HAVE AN AUTOPSY TO DETERMINE ANY ALCOHOL LEVEL OR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE IN HIS BLOOD. WALKING ALONG THAT STETCH OF HIWAY 101 AT 1:30 AM IS WORTH CHECKING OUT. VERY DANGEROUS AND PRIME TIME FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN DRINKING I'VE SEEN IT ALL;I AM A RETIRED FIRE CAPTAIN FROM SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.
