Salem Receives Tree City USA Growth Award for 2011

Salem-News.com

(SALEM) - Salem has been a Tree City USA for 36 consecutive years. In 2011, the City went above and beyond the annual Tree City USA requirements and received a Tree City USA Growth Award. The Arbor Day Foundation recognized the City for significant achievements in the Planning and Management category.

The City was awarded points for using a computerized system to assess the City's potential tree canopy and for significantly improving an ordinance related to trees.

The Geographic Information System tree canopy analysis helped identify potential tree planting sites by neighborhood, land use, and zoning.

The Salem Historic Preservation Code was modified to include preservation of existing trees and replacement of diseased trees through a historic design review process.
