State Music Championship Finals Results

(SALEM) - The 2006 State Music Championship finals took place over two weekends in May.

To be eligible for the State finals, a high school choir, band or orchestra must have received a No.1 superior rating in performance at their league or a sanctioned district and regional adjudicated festival.

They must submit recordings to an outside panel of music judges, who make the selection on the best 22 schools in choir, band and orchestra to compete in the State championships.

Salem-Keizer had representation from every high school at the state finals and received first place championships in each music area of choir, band, string orchestra and symphony orchestra.

The following are the specific championships and the top five placements at the state finals:

Choir:

1st Place : Sprague HS - directed by Russ Christensen (tied with Cleveland ) 3rd Place : McNary HS - directed by Paul M 5th Place : South Salem HS - directed by Carol Stenson

Band:

1st Place : South Salem HS - directed by Mary Lou Boderman (This represents the 10th State band championship for South Salem HS) 2nd Place : West Salem HS - directed by Ike Nail and Brian Griffiths

String Orchestra:

1st Place - Sprague HS - directed by Stephen Nelson (This represents the 21st State Championship for Sprague in string orchestra) 5th place - South Salem HS - directed by Richard Bauer Symphony Orchestra:

1st Place - Sprague HS - directed by Stephen Nelson and Richard Such 2nd Place - South Salem HS - directed by Richard Bauer and Mary Lou Boderman 4th Place - North Salem HS - directed by Larry Garrett and Richard Frey 5th Place - West Salem HS - directed by Stephanie Johnson and Ike Nail

In addition, the Best of the Northwest choir competition for HS and MS divisions were held the week of May 8 with the following results:

1st Place HS - Sprague HS Choir - directed by Russ Christensen 2nd Place HS - McNary HS- directed by Paul Mayhew 1st Place MS - Leslie MS Choir - directed by Lee Kirkegaard 3rd Place MS - Judson MS Choir - directed by David Loney 4th Place MS - Whiteaker MS Choir - directed by Erika McCauley
