Oregon Senate Passes Driver's Card Legislation and Delivers Victory to Latino Community

Causa Oregon Applauds Oregon State Legislature for Their Passage of SB833, Oregon’s Safe Roads Bill.

Oregon capital

(SALEM) - Today, the Oregon State House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 833 – Oregon’s bipartisan Safe Roads Bill by 38 to 20. The bill now goes to Governor Kitzhaber for a signature making Oregon the 5th State in the Nation to create a temporary driver’s card. Washington, Utah, New Mexico and Illinois have passed similar legislation.

Senate Bill 833 is a public safety measure designed to improve traffic safety and reduce the number of unlicensed and uninsured motorists on Oregon’s roads. The legislation creates a temporary Driver’s Card.

“This is the largest victory for Latino families, Causa, our allies and our movement in Oregon history”, said Luis Guerra, spokesperson for Causa Oregon. “The work that went into passage of SB833 is due to the dedication and hard work of a broad coalition of bipartisan legislators, civic leaders, law enforcement and organizations from the immigrant rights, legal, business, faith, education and health communities.”

Guerra added, “We expect our strategy in building this broad coalition needed to pass SB833 in Oregon to be a model for other states with similar driver’s card legislation pending like Maryland and California.”

Passage of SB833 comes at an important time while the U.S. Congress is taking up Comprehensive Immigration Reform at the Federal level.

Guerra concluded, “Once Congress passes an Immigration Reform Bill, there will still be a year or more before immigrants will be able to benefit from it. SB833 provides relief for our families here in Oregon who are suffering and need to get to work, drive their children to school and to the doctor.”

SB833 will be signed by Governor Kitzhaber tomorrow (May 1st) during a special ceremony at the May Day Rally on the steps of the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. Once signed into law, the bill will take affect after January 1, 2014. Individuals wishing to apply for the driver’s cards at the DMV will need to wait until after January 1, 2014 to do so.

ABOUT SENATE BILL 833

Senate Bill 833 is a public safety measure designed to improve traffic safety and reduce the number of unlicensed and uninsured motorists on Oregon’s roads. The legislation creates a temporary Driver’s Card.

The Oregon Driver Card (ODC) is a new document designed to keep our roads safe by allowing individuals, who do not have the documentation to access Oregon Driver’s Licenses, to get licensed and insured. Such individuals include:

  1. Elderly, who were born at home rather at a hospital, and cannot, provide a birth certificate.
  2. Emerging homeless, to re-enter the workforce and society, although it requires all applicants to prove residency in Oregon for at least a year.
  3. Veterans, it would permit our decorated and honorable servicemen and servicewomen to use their military documents in the application process.
  4. Undocumented Oregonians and workers.

This bill will not go into effect, nor will the current immigration bs in congress pass the house if the senate passes it. We need to demand that Kitzhaber, draft-dodging baby boomer, resign from office. Publishers and chief editors of the largest news media (including press and television) and far left loon legislators all belong in jail pending trial for treason...

For your info: There is a preliminary plan to gather over the needed 58,000 plus signatures to put this on the ballot in November 2014. When (not "IF") these signatures are filed, within 90 days of the state legislature ending this term, it will prevent this "law" from going into effect 1/1/14. Considering that current DMV law requiring proof of citizenship was also by vote using this format, no sweat, illegals will not have access to this drivers license card. Over 300,000 signatures were gather last time in less than 60 days, but only enough were turned in to meet statistical muster. Oregon's Sec. of State would be a great individual to polygraph via public forum concerning voter fraud. How about doing that Brown? Far left libs hate the Oregon Constitution because voter's still have the last word. Be very concerned when you have a lone federal judge who over rules the voters. This is a declaration of tyranny by these very evil creeps!

What an idiot State. It seems like the whole Country is sucking up to these illegal criminals. All the politicians, all levels, are nothing but high paid whores. No one gives a damn about the American people anymore.

BY the way..last time I went to Mexico, I was harassed more going in than coming out. And while there, I had a rental car and was pulled over three times, for nothing more than asking if I had insurance..I did, and they let me go. But I had to sit there 30 minutes each time. I dont plan on going to Mexico in the near future again. I wonder how long the U.S. can afford this. Hospitals closing down etc. I did see a poll today tho, most hispanics in Mexico no longer think coming to the U.S. is a better life. Interesting eh? 35% still think U.S. is better. Maybe we will start moving to Mexico soon? This is agenda 21, research it. My friend went to the U.S. side of the river to hang out with friends. He showed me a video of illegals crossing without a problem, but the "authorities" hassled him and his group for having a few beers in their ice chest. I will find the video and post it later.

Cool..come 2014 I can go get a different drivers license without having documentation. I can be anonymous! Do people have any clue how dangerous this is? The war on terror yet again a failure. Maybe alCIAda will get drivers licenses now too! I just called Oregon State Police to see if their investigation in regards to the accident that happened on highway 22 was completed and if I can get a copy. The driver that killed the pregnant school teacher was hispanic. The investigation is not done, and they said the info on immigration status would not be included...Go figure. Drive careful people, the streets will be filled with dangerous drivers, who have only been here short time, and will have a drivers license. Many will not be able to read street signs and warnings..Welcome to the North American Union...have fun. American cistizens who already have a drivers license need birth certificate etc to renew tho...go figure. Come 2012 I will just go get a new drivers license with the name Esteban Gonzales, and then get food stamps and free health care..I am fine with this legislation. My brother told me back in 2000, move to Mexico, get citizenship, then sneak back over the border..He was wise, but now, I dont have to, I will just change my name and make a new identity...cool. And now that the IRS is giving billions in tax refunds to illegal immigrants, I will be rich!!! very cool. IRS sending billions to illegal immigrants...here is the link: http://finance.townhall.com/columnists/bobbeauprez/2013/03/30/irs-knowingly-sends-billions-in-fraudulent-refunds-to-illegal-immigrants-n1553242
