(RALEIGH, N.C.) - Eight mostly elderly and sick people were killed by a lone gunman Sunday in a North Carolina nursing home. Police say 45-year old Robert Stewart, went room by room shooting elderly victims until a Carthage, N.C. Police Officer Justin Garner shot and wounded him in a hallway, ending what officials called a bloodbath. "[Garner] acted in nothing short of a heroic way today, and but for his actions, we certainly could have had a worse tragedy," Moore County District Attorney Maureen Krueger told reporters, adding, "We had an officer who performed his job the way he was supposed to." Stewart is alive and in police custody. Robert Steward, reportedly the spouse of an employee at the 90-bed Pine Lake nursing home in Carthage, North Carolina. As a result of Sunday's actions, he is facing eight counts of first degree murder. Suspect in custody who was not a patient of Pine Lake Health & Rehab in Carthage, North Carolina! It has 90 beds, cares for Alzheimer's patients. Police: shootings took place at 10:30 am where nursing home sits about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh, N.C. Here is a CNN breaking news report shortly after the shooting: Carthage is a small town of roughly 1,800 people in the North Carolina Sandhills, an area popular among retirees thats about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh.
