Clogged Stormdrains May Lead to Fines

(SALEM) - A proposed ordinance would allow Marion County to recoup costs associated with blocked road drains. Kevin Hays from Salem-News dot-com reports.

Marion County Public Works Director Jim Sears says recent heavy rains are causing erosion run-off that is filling county culverts, leading to flooded roads and blocked drains.

Sears estimates the county spends between $5,000 and $20,000 a year cleaning out the drains.

If commissioners approve the ordinance, it would allow the county to cite and fine landowners a maximum of $500 per day if they refuse to clean their drains of debris and silt from erosion.

If cited, the property owner would have the right to a hearing.

Sears says the major problem areas are near county Christmas Tree farms.

Commissioners Janet Carlson and Sam Brentano have postponed a vote on the ordinance, until they get more feedback from the public.
