(LAREDO, Texas) - U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Laredo Community College main campus discovered an abandoned tiger inside a small cage earlier this month.

The discovery occurred 12 March, early in the morning at about 1:30 a.m., as agents were conducting line watch operations. The agents said they saw an object that resembled a large bundle wrapped in a blue sheet.

As they approached, they heard a growling sound and realized it was coming from the object.

"When they got closer to the bundle they realized it was a cage with an animal inside. Upon further investigation, they realized it was an abandoned Bengal tiger cub approximately four to six months old," a Border Patrol news release states.

Agents secured the area and no subjects were found. The cub was secured and transported to the Laredo South Station.

The cub will be evaluated by a local veterinarian and turned over to Texas Parks and Wildlife.

To report suspicious activity such as drug and/or alien smuggling, contact the Laredo Sector Border Patrol toll free telephone number at (800) 343-1994.
