(Keizer) - Keizer Police took a 51-year old man into custody after a five-hour standoff today. A neighbor who called police says the man served as a Navy SEAL in the Vietnam War.

The incident began around 11:00 in the morning. The neighbor who called police said the man was suicidal and she was concerned for his safety.

It happened at the New Heritage Village apartments in Keizer, in the 5000 block of 10th Avenue NE.

Keizer Police say they called the Salem Police SWAT Team out to assist them in establishing a perimeter and evacuating nearby residents.

By 4:00 PM the man surrendered to police and was taken to Salem Hospital for a mental evaluation. His name was unavailable at the time of this report.

58,163 Americans died during the war in Vietnam that lasted from November 1964 to April 1975.

Considerably more than 58,163 have taken their own lives in the years following the war. If you know a veteran who is having problems from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, suggest that they contact ptsdsupport.net.

I am a former US Navy SEAL (Vietnam era) and worked with Retired SEAL Master Chief Collins in exposing miilitary imposters. I would hasten to point out that if the man described in this article is truly 51 years old, then he would have been born in 1956, and would NOT have been eligible for military duty of ANY sort until his 18th birthday... sometime in 1974. The last Navy SEAL combat elements left Vietnam in November of 1972. The Paris Peace Accords were signed by the US and North Vietnam in January of 1973, our POWs were returned to us from Hanoi, and all US combat forces from all branches of the military were OUT OF VIETNAM by April 1973. The man was never a SEAL, and is too young to have been involved in the Vietnam War. That said... I, too, wish this man the best of luck in dealing with his problems. Thank you for the opportunity to comment. Steve Robinson RM2(SEAL) USN '70-'78

I am a Retired Navy SEAL Master Chief and one of a few of us that provide verification to news and police agencies regarding the question of whether a person was a Navy SEAL. As mentioned in this article a neighbor mentioned that she thought this fellow was a SEAL and in checking our records we find two Hardin's listed with different first names and both went through training in the mid-late 80's. No Vietnam era SEALs are by the name Hardin. I wish this man the best of luck in his troubles and hope he receives proper care. Thank you, Sincerely, Steven Collins, GMCM (SEAL) Ret.
