Hurley said the fire had been smoldering for several hours and that it appeared to have started on the couch, likely from a smoker's carelessness.

(SALEM) - Salem firefighters responded to a blaze at a Salem home at 1396 Windsong Court NW Saturday at 9:04 AM, recovering a woman from the fire that caused heavy damage to the home.

Salem Fire Capt. Bill Hurley says smoke was showing as the first engine company arrived. Fire crews forced entry into the home to find heavy smoke and flames throughout the living room area. Hurley says the crew immediately went into a rescue mode. A second alarm was called at 9:17 AM bringing additional resources.

Firefighters removed a 66-year old woman from the home and had the room and contents fire out in about 20 minutes.

Hurley said the fire had been smoldering for several hours and that it appeared to have started on the couch, likely from a smoker's carelessness.

The homeowner was alone with her two dogs, which ran out the house as fire firefighters arrived. She was transported to Salem Hospital. Neighbors are taking care of the two dogs. The home sustained heavy damage.

Gotta love the "tact" here - the fire started "likely from a smoker's carelessness" and "the homeowner was alone..." and on the TV news it showed the smoke from a cigarette coming up as she was being interviewed. I suspect her insurance agent will have a nice conversation with her.
