(SALEM) - Police officers were called to Salem Hospital Wednesday after a woman with a gunshot wound was brought to the Emergency Room by a friend. Officers arrived at the hospital around 10:22 AM Wednesday, learning that a 25-year old Salem woman had sustained a shotgun blast to her upper leg area. The victim, who's injuries were not life threatening, required surgery. Salem detectives were told the shooting happened at 745 20th St SE in Salem. In talking with the victim, they found out the suspect, 26-year old Shane Edel Edwards of Salem, had fled the scene after the shooting, according to Salem Police Lt. Jim Anglemier. `It was learned that Edwards knew the victim and it appears Edwards was handling the shotgun when it discharged and wounded the victim." Around 5:30 AM Thursday, Anglemier says deputies with the Marion County Sheriff's Office responded to a single vehicle car crash in the 4400 block of Iberis St. NE. They found the crashed vehicle abandoned. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen vehicle. Inside of it, Anglemier says police found a shotgun, `Which was later determined to be the firearm used in the shooting incident, and other items which belonged to Edwards." About 45-minutes after the crash, Edwards was found walking near 45th Ave NE & Indigo St. NE and taken into custody without incident. Shane E. Edwards was booked into the Marion County Correctional Facility on charges of Assault II, Unlawful Use of a a Weapon, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Possession of a Short Barrel Shotgun, sometimes referred to as a `sawed off" shotgun. Edwards will remain behind bars; the Assault II charge carries no bail. The other crimes have bail amounts of $20,000 each.
