Boise Area Juvenile Breaks 150 MPH in a Stolen Car Trying to Elude Police

After the chase ended, the driver gave up peacefully.

(NORTHEAST OREGON) - A second long distance attempt to elude in eastern Oregon safely ended Thursday morning after Oregon State Police successfully spiked one of the fleeing car's tires. The juvenile driver was operating a stolen Ford Mustang that at one point was going 153 mph as the incident traveled approximately 28 miles in Morrow and Umatilla counties, and involved State, county and local police agencies.

Police say that on Wednesday at approximately 7:30 AM, the 17-year old juvenile male suspect from Star, Idaho, was driving a stolen 2006 Ford Mustang GT when he attempted to use a stolen credit card to purchase gas at an Arlington-area gas station. The suspect left eastbound from the gas station on Interstate 84.

After the attempt to use the stolen credit card was reported, Morrow County Undersheriff Steve Myren set up about 18 miles east of Arlington near milepost 155.

Undersheriff Myren spotted the Ford Mustang eastbound at a high rate of speed and obtained a radar reading of 153 mph. Undersheriff Myren pulled out to stop the Ford Mustang but it continued eastbound in an attempt to elude. Morrow County Sheriff's Office notified OSP and area law enforcement agencies. As the car continued eastbound, Boardman Police Department joined Morrow County in trying to keep the car in sight.

Near milepost 178, OSP Trooper Dave Aydelotte set up spike strips, successfully spiking the right front tire. The car continued eastbound at speeds over 130 mph with OSP Lieutenant Greg Sherman behind it keeping it in sight.

The Ford Mustang continued another five miles until the right front tire blew out. The driver then pulled onto the right shoulder near milepost 183, stopped and got out of the car where he laid on the ground until he was taken into custody without further incident.

Nine officers from OSP (6), Morrow County Sheriff's Office (1), and Boardman Police Department (2) were involved in this incident.

Morrow County Sheriff's Department transported the 17-year old driver to the juvenile detention facility at Northern Oregon Correctional Facility in The Dalles. OSP and Morrow County Sheriff's Office have cited or will be charging the suspect with the following charges in the listed respective counties:

Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (Morrow County) Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle (Morrow County) Reckless Driving (Morrow County) Exceeding the Posted Speed to wit: 153 mph in a 65 mph area (Morrow County)

Reckless Driving (Umatilla County) Felony Attempt to Elude in a Vehicle (Umatilla County) Exceeding the Posted Speed to wit: 130 mph in a 65 mph area (Umatilla County) No Operators License to wit: Suspended in Idaho (Umatilla County)

The car was reportedly stolen in Boise, Idaho when the suspect allegedly found an unlocked residential garage and took it.

Additional charges may be pending in Gilliam and other counties as the investigation continues. His name is withheld at this time unless he will be charged as an adult.

Another attempt to elude ended safely Wednesday west of The Dalles after the driver of a stolen California car attempted to elude State, county and local officers over a distance of approximately 50 miles.
