Mar-07-2007 12:13TweetFollow @OregonNews Deadline Approaching to Claim Active Duty Military Property Tax Exemption in OregonSalem-News.comSoldiers may file for exemption every year for which they qualify.
(SALEM) - If you're an active-duty soldier, April 2nd is the last day you may claim the active duty military service member's property tax exemption for the 2007-08 tax year. The exemption exempts up to $60,000 of the assessed value of a qualified active duty military service member's home. Soldiers may file for this exemption every year for which they qualify. If you are an active-duty soldier, you may qualify if you are an Oregon resident serving in the Oregon National Guard (Title 32), and ordered for the first time on or after January 1st, 2005 to service under Title 10. You must serve for at least 179 consecutive days during the tax year for which you claim the exemption. For this tax year, this means you are ordered to serve on active duty for 179 days or more between July 1st, 2007 and June 30th, 2008. You may claim this exemption for 2007-08 by filing an Oregon Active Duty Military Service Member's Exemption Claim form along with a copy of your military orders by April 2nd. File the form and attached military orders with the assessor's office in the county where your home is located. If the qualified service member was killed in action, the lawful occupant of the service member's home may file for the exemption. You must file the form and attach the qualified soldier's DD214 and one of the following: driver's license, election registration card, or property tax statement. You must file with the county assessor's office at any time during the tax year following the year the qualified soldier was killed in action. You may claim this exemption only once. Claim forms, instructions, and more information are available at your county assessor's office or on the Department of Revenue's website, www.oregon.gov/DOR/PTD/docs/303-084.pdf.
