(SALEM) - Staying Awake while driving is always a good thing, but it may become a little harder to do beginning next week. That because of Sunday’s time change to Daylight Savings Time, and for drivers and commuters it may not seem like a big deal, however it can present challenges. “Drivers need to be aware they may not be as alert as they think they are when they get going in the morning and again in the evening,” said Walt McAllister with ODOT’s Safety Division. He adds that there are plenty of options for drowsy drivers. Take a break from the vehicle. Walk around and breathe in fresh air. Consider finding a place to stay overnight. Take a nap; a 15-20 minute nap can often provide enough rest to finish the drive. Drink the equivalent of two cups of coffee; this can increase alertness for several hours (note: it may not have this affect on people who are accustomed to drinking coffee). To avoid getting sleepy in the first place, the National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of sleep each night for adults. For Daylight Saving Time, McAllister recommends starting your schedule adjustments early, such as on Thursday or Friday. Another option is to limit your TV and internet time and other evening activities on Sunday so you have a restful night’s sleep.
