(Salem) - Thursday, March 2nd is Read Across America Day, an annual event that promotes literacy and celebrates reading. March 2nd is also Dr. Seuss's birthday so many events that day are centered on Dr. Seuss books and activities. Here's a sample list of events happening in Salem-Keizer Schools. Feel free to contact the schools directly. Elementary Schools: Lamb: The school is hosting an assembly. Plus staff and students will dress up as their favorite book character. Liberty: The school is holding their RIF book give away in the morning and then buddy rooms will be getting together to read in the afternoon. Lee: The school is hosting a Guest Reader activity twice during the day. The first time is 9:00 to 9:30 AM and the second is 2:00 to 2:30 PM. Guest readers of all diverse backgrounds will come to all the classrooms, K-5. The school is calling it a celebration of Dr. Seuss with a Diversity twist. Wright: The school is holding a school-wide reading event from 1:35 to 2:40 PM. Students will be given individual passports that send them to three different classrooms. Each group of students is a random assortment of all 6 grades. Classroom teachers will read stories chosen for the theme of "Fun with Math and Science." All other adults on staff, as well as parent volunteers, serve as "tour directors" and stay with their assigned group. After 15 minutes in a classroom, passports are stamped and groups are sent to the next room on their route. Students will enjoy visiting classrooms and remembering times spent in their "old" room or looking forward to being in the "big kids' rooms." It's a fun time that becomes a special "Wright" memory! Baker Charter: Students and staff will dress up as their favorite book character. Between 9:10-9:20 AM the school will dedicate the Baker Charter Library, followed by students reading in the hallways. Between 10:00-11:20 AM students will rotate through 4 rooms and staff will read books to them. Each session will last for 20 minutes. Bethel: On March 2nd, Bethel is doing their second RIF Distribution of the year. The day before each distribution, the school does a motivational activity. So on March 1st, the school will have guest readers reading to small groups of students. Adult readers will include Bethel parents, grandparents, relatives, one police officer, and one fire fighter. This activity will motivate them to choose a book of their choice on March 2nd for RIF. Scott: March 1st is Teacher/Reader Exchange, during which teachers go to other classrooms to read a favorite book aloud. On March 2nd is Book Character Day * staff and students dress up as favorite book characters. At the end of the day on March 2nd, the school will hold a book character parade through the school. Cummings: The school will start the day with a "Parade of Characters." Each student will come dressed as his or her favorite book character and will bring the book with them to school. Book reports will be displayed through out the building. In addition, students and staff will be reading aloud from their favorite books, and the school will host D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything and Read). The drive is the result of a community member, Leon Scott, who found a penny on a table at the South Salem Starbucks shop. He decided to double the penny each day until it grew to a substantial amount, and then give it to a school to use for literacy. The literacy fund grew to $265.00. McKinley is fortunate to be the recipient of these funds. The school's penny drive is going to be combined with Mr. Scott's funds and used for library books.
