Bob's Hamburgers to Make Triumph Return During The Oregon State Fair

(SALEM, Ore.) - For almost anyone who grew up in Salem from 1955 to 2003, there was one fast-food restaurant that was a destination for almost everyone.

From state employees and high school lunch breaks, to weekend’s while cruising the town at night, or after local youth sporting events, to just a night of family fun and good food. That place was called: Bob’s Hamburgers.

Now, years after the restaurant went out of business, fans of the popular Salem fast food restaurant, will be able to get all the Bob’s favorites they have longed for during this year’s addition of the Oregon State Fair.

Former owner Bob Corey has signed an exclusive agreement with Salem business Golden Grill Concessions to offer fair goers a taste of the original Bob’s experience.

Gina Dankenbring, who managed a Salem Bob’s Restaurant for five years, and has owned Golden Grill Concessions for the past 13 years, says when she posted the announcement on Facebook, she had more messages and shares of the announcement than she has friends.

“I couldn’t be more excited about bringing back something that Salem residents and former employees from around the state have been waiting for such a longtime,” Dankenbring said. “Along with the food, we will also be selling Bob's shirts, hats, and bottled secret sauce at our state fair booth,” Dankenbring added.

The best news is that 100 percent of the net sales from the bottled secret sauce as well as a percentage of the gross food sales will be donated directly to Bob Corey's non profit Chemeketa scholarship fund, Golden Grill Concessions owner Gina Dankenbring said.

Bob Corey plans to make his appearance on opening day, August 22, along with his son Scott Corey and grandson Justin Corey to meet and greet their loyal fans.

While they are still working out the details of the exact menu here is what Bob’s fans can expect.

Original Bob's Hamburgers, Cheeseburgers, Double Cheeseburgers, Big Brutes, french fries, drinks -- which may even include root beer shakes and the famous Orange Bang drinks. The burgers will be grilled and the sauce will be made from scratch, just like Bob created it. They will wrap the burgers and put them in a bag, just like we all remember, and you can even order your burger "extra extra", Dankenbring said. Employees will even wear Bob’s hats and t-shirts just like the good old days.

Bob Corey was the founder of the Bob's Hamburgers chain which began in Salem in 1955, with his first location at Capitol and Hood Street. He offered hamburgers at 19-cents, french fries for 11-cents, a shrimp burger for 39-cents, milkshakes 21-cents, and soft drinks a whopping 10-cents.

He and his family grew the fast food chain into a Willamette Valley, and Central Oregon hot-spot with restaurant locations in Salem, Keizer, West Salem, and the Lancaster Mall, as well as stores in Bend, Redmond, Springfield, Eugene, and Junction City.

Dankenbring says they may roll out the Bob’s menu at other Salem events before the state fair, and fans should keep up to date with any news about that on their Facebook site, as well as employment opportunities, which she hopes some former Bob’s employees come back and take a walk down memory lane of their days working for the famous Salem fast-food chain.

In the coming weeks, there will be a special application for former Bob’s employees interest in reliving their glory days with Bob’s. Keep watching the Golden Grill Concessions page on Facebook for more information on that.

The Oregon State Fair runs August 22 through September 1 in Salem. Discounted admission tickets are on sale now.

I am a 75 year old gentleman (loosely) I must've paid a couple workers wages for Bob's Burgers in 1960's. A 19 cent hamburger was all I could afford then, they were 5 for a dollar on Saturday's! Needless to say, I always pigged out that day! I Only lived a block from the one on Washington st in Eugene I was there so often they thought I worked there!~We all want you to Bring em back!

Didn't know them but wrote back, told them about the Highlands and the hot rod I was gonna' build when I got out. Mrs Corey wrote back. She said it sounded like I knew the route the kids took in Salem. She said they were at the North end of the loop... WE'RE THE BOBS! Couldn't believe it! 10,000 miles from home and I get a letter from where the hot cars hung out! Sent Christmas cards for several years. They'd always include some "Free Burgers & Fries" business cards signed by them. Hope to meet them on Opening Day and Thank them. 5 of us even had a Cheeseburger eating contest one time. I wimped out after nine! The winner wolfed down 15, but they didn't stay down on the way home! Thanks to everyone who's working to have them at the fair!

I Love Love Bob's. Keizer OR. I think I may have teared up a bit with this announcement. I remember every Sunday after church, a big group of us kids would head over to Bob's burgers and spend the afternoon. I was the little one of the group, but could put away more cheeseburgers then anyone else. Lol. That seriously was a highlight of my childhood, and something that my children have not gotten to experience. I would love to share of glimps to my children. I am just hoping that maybe if this adventure with Bob's goes well, they will open at least one resteraunt. I promise I will be there at least once a week if not more. :-) Let's Bring It Bob's!!!
